Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems designs, builds and delivers space, defense and aviation-related systems to customers around the world. Our main products include launch vehicles and related propulsion systems; missile products, subsystems and defense electronics; precision weapons, armament systems and ammunition; satellites and associated space components and services; and advanced aerospace structures.

Performs a variety of duties assisting mechanical engineers in the development of mechanical and electromechanical engineering designs, tests, fabrications, modifications, assemblies and components. Drafts detailed drawings for fabrication. Devices, fabricates, and assembles new or modified mechanical components or assemblies. Sets up and tests complete prototype units and subassemblies under operational conditions. Analyzes data and recommends modifications to components or test procedure to meet desired specifications.

Role Description &


The Mechanical Tech will

  • Plan the methods and procedures required to provide technical support for scientific or engineering programmatic work.

  • Design support hardware components according to guidelines for prototype or one of a kind items.

  • Recognize design deficiencies or malfunctions where immediate determinations regarding causes and needed corrections are required.

  • Daily responsibilities will require direct contact with space launch vehicle hardware and solid rocket motors.

  • Perform a wide variety of non-standard tasks in the mechanical and electrical areas.

  • Perform both mechanical and electrical structural analysis set-ups.

  • Maintain proper documentation records for all flight hardware assembly, integration and test activities.

  • Some business travel may be required.

Experience Requirements:

  • Candidate should have a minimum of six years of related experience.

  • Ability to travel :Travel expectation of 0-20%

  • U.S. citizenship required.

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

  • Must be able to read technical drawings and use basic hand tools.

Basic Qualifications:


High School Diploma or GED is required Education/Certifications and 6 years related work experience.

Two years experience with RF communications systems and or Telemetry ground station equipment. Experience with, but not limited to, RFDF and EMCON RF systems. Preferred experience with Wallops FTS antenna control systems. * With limited supervision, operate and perform maintenance on mechanical and electronic components of the steerable helical antennas, antenna control units, low noise amplifiers, RF receiving equipment, down-converters, digital and analog recording devices and distribution amplifiers. Proficient with interpreting electrical diagrams such as functional block diagrams and schematics. * Ability to troubleshoot to the LRU level. * Ensure proper calibration and operation of all equipment using standard test equipment such as function generators, signal generators, power meters, multi-meters and oscilloscopes. * Maintain up-to-date logs and preventive maintenance schedules and give oral and written reports. * Must be able to gather mission requirements and coordinate equipment and configure to meet those requirements * Must be familiar with logistics and parts requests procedures. * Perform manual tasks, which may include lifting 40 lbs or more and some climbing around antenna systems. Mechanical knowledge will be required to maintain systems. * Shall be capable of interacting with scientists, experimenters, range users, and other personnel involved in remote operations. * Be willing to travel less than 20% of the year, typically 3 to 5 trips. * Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 KBR Wallops Island VA
