The University of Virginia is accepting applications for a Mechanical Engineering Associate or Electrical Engineering Associate to join the Design Services team within Facilities Management. The successful candidate will fill one of these positions based on their experience, education, skills, and abilities. We are a multi-discipline team engaged in all facets of building engineering and provide design services for a wide variety of University renovations including classrooms, labs, healthcare facilities, athletic facilities, and student housing. Facilities Management (FM) supports the University of Virginia's wide range of research, academic and patient care programs. With over 1,200 employees dedicated to excellence, Facilities Management is responsible for the day-to-day operation, repair and maintenance of UVA's buildings, infrastructure, and grounds as well as other University-owned and leased properties.

Responsibilities:

Mechanical Engineering Associates:

  • Prepare construction documents for HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection design using Revit for most projects.

  • Provide engineering calculations and analysis of mechanical systems with oversight from senior team members.

  • Review submittals and perform construction administration services.

  • Provide project management support for mechanical and plumbing specific projects.

  • Confirm existing conditions from drawing archives and site visits.

  • Adhere to and assist in developing department standards.

  • Develop and maintain project workbook using eBuilder.

  • Participate in meetings with project managers, consulting architects and engineers, University end-users and staff, and others.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Electrical Engineering Associates:

  • Prepare construction documents for power, lighting and low-voltage systems using Revit for most projects.

  • Provide engineering calculations and analysis of electrical systems with oversight from senior team members.

  • Review submittals and perform construction administration services.

  • Provide project management support for electrical specific projects.

  • Confirm existing conditions from drawing archives and site visits.

  • Adhere to and assist in developing department standards.

  • Develop and maintain project workbook using eBuilder.

  • Participate in meetings with project managers, consulting architects and engineers, University end-users and staff, and others.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications (both positions):

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field, relevant experience in a technical field may be considered in lieu of a degree

  • Some building design and construction experience is typical

  • Proficiency in drafting mechanical or electrical systems (Revit preferred)

  • Applicants who successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam are preferred.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (both positions):

  • Use of critical thinking and the ability to communicate ideas.

  • Ability to meet preset deadlines.

  • Excellent written and oral communication.

  • Knowledge of mechanical or electrical engineering concepts and principles.

  • Proficiency in the use of technology, including design software, to perform engineering analysis and prepare construction documents.

  • Ability to communicate with stakeholders to present design options and explain selected solutions.

  • Excellent time management skills including the ability to manage individual's work across multiple concurrent project schedules.

Compensation:

The Anticipated Hiring Range for both positions is $68,000 - $80,000. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits. Employee benefits package highlights include:

For this position, the selected candidate will need to complete the required background checks prior to the start date of the position.

Physical Demands (both positions):

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers, however, regular visits to inspect existing buildings construction sites will be required. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
