The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Mechanical Inspector to join our building maintenance team. The candidate we seek will be responsible for inspecting, testing, and evaluating mechanical systems within our buildings to ensure they meet safety standards and operate efficiently. Additionally, the role includes inspecting new construction projects and reviewing construction plans for compliance with mechanical codes and standards.

About this Opportunity
Provides technical services to assure that buildings constructed in the City are safe for use and occupation in compliance with the City mechanical code and other relevant laws and ordinances.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
Inspects buildings under construction and new heating and cooling installations to assure compliance with City building and mechanical code;
Checks construction plans and specifications to determine compliance;
Makes field inspections in response to requests and complaints;
Issues permits for installation of heating or cooling equipment;
Maintains manual and computerized inspection records;
Attends staff meetings;
Prepares correspondence in relation to Cedar Rapids Mechanical Code;
May serve as secretary to the Mechanical Board for Licensing and Appeals;
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices;
Attends work regularly at the designated place and time;
Supports continuous process improvement initiatives;
Performs related work as required.
Required Education and Experience
Graduation from High School or a GED and current Cedar Rapids Metro Area Mechanical Journeyman's License or equivalent Mechanical Journeyman's license (i.e. other municipality, county or state); and
Work experience as specified in the Mechanical Code of Cedar Rapids, including installation of heating, ventilating, cooling and refrigeration systems; and
Working knowledge in residential, commercial and industrial construction with a minimum of five years documented journeyman level experience or equivalent; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
