Designs, analyzes, develops, modifies and evaluates materials, mechanical systems, equipment and packaging. Conducts feasibility, design margin and validation analysis and empirical testing on new and modified designs. Leads and/or assists in architecture development and assessment. Evaluates reliability of materials, properties, designs, and techniques used in production. May direct support personnel and/or partner organizations in the preparation of detailed design, design testing, prototype fabrication, and production tooling.

Responsibilities:

  • Designs portions of engineering solutions for mechanical and thermal hardware, electronics enclosures, and production tooling based on established engineering principles and in accordance with development technology practices and guidelines.

  • Develops and implements parameters and test plans for existing designs, including validation of tolerances, form/fit/function, shock and vibration, electromagnetic interference, safety, reliability, developing fan curves, system power measurements & acoustics.

  • Collaborates and communicates with internal and outsourced development partners on mechanical and thermal design and development.

  • Participates as a member of project team of other mechanical hardware engineers and internal and outsourced development partners to develop reliable, cost effective and high quality solutions for low to moderately- complex products.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Typically 2-4 years experience.

  • Experience using ProEngineer or other 3D CAD software as a mechanical design tool.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to apply analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Designing sheet metal and plastic parts and associated production tooling and processes.

  • Using CFD and thermal mockups to validate thermal solution.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English and local language.

  • Ability to effectively communicate design proposals and negotiate options.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for technical direction over a group of engineers or specialists. EDUCATION Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, or equivalent. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Normally requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in Civil/Structural design (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Usually referred to as a lead position. Incumbent must be cognizant of the capabilities and limitations of various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment to effectively direct their use for diverse design assignments. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Participates in the development of project design concepts and criteria. * Analyzes complex design problems requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures. * Consults with construction personnel concerning design constructability. * Monitors project progress for technical accuracy and adherence to schedule and budget. * Represents respective projects at meetings and conferences. * May plan, organize, and supervise design activities for a project of significant size and complexly or two or more projects of moderate size and complexity. * Provides conceptual design input for preliminary project estimates. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of clients, managers, designers and engineers. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. WORK ENVIRONMENT Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit or be temporarily assigned to work in an operating plant or at a construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
