We're looking for a thoughtful, well-rounded Mechanical Equipment Engineer to join our team! If you are a Mechanical Engineer who likes diverse projects, designing equipment, and takes pride in your work, then this is the job for you! We need an experienced Mechanical Equipment Engineer to support major oil and gas facility expansions in our Federal Business Unit working out of our Houston, Texas office.

The ideal candidate will have minimum 5+ years of experience designing primary equipment like pumps, compressors, pressure vessels and internals, tanks, heat exchangers, fired equipment, cooling towers, and third party designed and packaged equipment in Oil and Gas.

Seeking experience with rotating equipment.

Our Mechanical Equipment Engineers will be to design a variety of primary equipment used in oil and gas facilities. Project scope may include refinery facilities modifications, including HVAC, piping and piping supports, Fire protection equipment, rotating equipment, and other mechanical systems.


  • Work includes conceptual studies, detailed design, field installation, and construction support in the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

  • Primary equipment includes pumps, compressors, pressure vessels and internals, tanks, heat exchangers, fired equipment, cooling towers, and third party designed and packaged equipment.

  • Prepares mechanical equipment and packaged equipment calculations, specifications and data sheets, RFQ's, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.

  • Reviews mechanical equipment vendor drawings, and data. Interfaces with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, detailers/designers.

  • Prepares construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical equipment.

  • Participates in the development of P&ID's, package specifications, construction specifications, project schedules, project budgets, project staffing planning, and construction planning.

  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications. Must have familiarity with mechanical equipment design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE).

  • Prepares engineering computations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, surveys, and designs.

  • Completes a variety of assignments such as drawings, specifications, and other materials suitable for procurement and construction purposes. Frequently interfaces with other Engineering disciplines as well as other departments.

  • Provides technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers working on the same project.

  • May be required to provide the seal and signature of the professional engineer, as appropriate, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances.


  • BS degree in MechanicalEngineering required.

  • PE Preferred

  • Min of 5+ years of related mechanical equipment design experience. in engineering design or construction in oil and gas or petrochemical industries.

  • U.S. citizens ONLY due to government or federal requirement.

  • A National Agency Check will be needed for this position.

VIEW JOBS 11/11/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-02-09T00:00 OVERVIEW Independently performs Mechanical Design activities for all phases of mechanical development and equipment design for a project of moderate size and complexity (e.g., continuing services project involving a single design discipline). Must be fully competent in performing all conventional aspects of Mechanical or Piping Design and application of independent judgment for the evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard design criteria, methods and procedures. Periodic evaluation of work done by less experienced engineers or specialists is required. Assignments require knowledge and understanding of Project Management requirements including staffing and scheduling. RESPONSIBILITIES Provides technical guidance and coordination of manpower for the Mechanical Design staff assigned to one or more projects. Responsible for the evaluation and review required for hiring personnel. This position is typically a supervisory role for groups within the department or the department itself. EDUCATION: Requires high school diploma and normally requires a 4 year engineering degree. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of 15 years experience in Mechanical or Piping Design or related functional area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience). Experience in management of personnel or expertise in particular areas of engineering such as Heat Transfer, Metallurgy, Stress Analysis, Vessel Design, and/or Rotating Equipment. Needs to have 5+ years of experience working in a Lead/Supervisory role. Registration as a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) is highly preferred but not required. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: * Previous/current experience leading Small-to-Mid Capital projects with up to $60 million TIC (Total Installed Cost). * Previous/current experience with evergreen Alliance projects with $1 - $10 million TIC. TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Meets with clients' technical staff to discuss technical information and features. * Prepares sketches and performs calculations for a detailed segment of a project. * Conducts field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information. * Prepares equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval. * Evaluates vendors' bids and drawings to assure compliance with specifications. * Communicates equipment design to client and other design disciplines. * Reviews and approves design drawings for assigned segment of a project. * Participates in reviews of PFD's and P&ID's. * Participates in the preparation of equipment lists, piping line lists and specialty item lists. * Monitors subcontracted technical services' activities. * Participates in and is responsible for the preparation of design guides, guide specifications and contract proposals. * Supervises and directs the activities of other personnel working on one or more projects. * Provides input to estimates, proposals, scheduling, manpower planning, et cetera. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to senior management, public groups and/or boards of directors. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
