Mechanical Equipment Engineer II

Introduction

Merrick & Company is looking for an experienced Mechanical Equipment Engineer for Los Alamos, NM office to serve as a staff engineer on technology projects for the Department of Energy (DOE). This group specializes in the design of prototype/one-off custom equipment, gloveboxes, hot cells, specialty research equipment and custom-designed, remotely-operated mechanisms for handling radioactive and hazardous materials. This is a full time position.

This position is located in Los Alamos, a small community located in the scenic high desert of Northern New Mexico. Los Alamos offers access to a wealth of outdoor activities, a family-friendly community, an excellent public-school system and a low crime rate. Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer II will perform detailed design and analysis of custom equipment, individually and as part of design team. Typical equipment includes containment systems (gloveboxes, hoods), material handling equipment, small scale process piping & equipment, furnace systems, metal working systems (mills, lathes, rolling machines) and pressure vessels.

Scope/Key Responsibility

Follow regimented quality assurance / quality control procedures. Detailed design activities include preparation of fabrication drawing packages, equipment datasheets, fabrication specifications, procurement specifications, engineering studies, test plans, and detailed equipment sizing & qualification calculations. Meets expectations for attendance and punctuality. Responsibilities include coordinating / leading the detailed phases of a design and working directly with other engineering disciplines.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of four (4) years design engineering experience.

  • Demonstrated capability in the design of custom equipment and/or containment systems, development of design documentation including fabrication drawings, engineering analyses, strength of materials calculations, fabrication and procurement specifications and a basic knowledge in the selection of materials.

  • Proficient with 3D design software - (PTC Creo or ProE preferred)

  • Degree Requirements:Bachelor of Sciences in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Accredited Program is required. Engineering Technology degree will not be considered.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office products (Word, Excel).

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Applicant must be able and willing to obtain a DOE clearance.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in glovebox ergonomics preferred

  • Familiarity with AutoCad a plus.

  • Experience in the DOE and DOD market segments a plus.

  • PE License required for internal promotion

  • Local candidates preferred.

  • Client projects for this position require US Citizenship

Job Description The designer will create drafted documentation associated with HVAC and Plumbing/Piping systems for a variety of facility projects. Work typically includes developing process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and layout of mechanical equipment and associated duct and piping systems. The designer will typically work in a design team environment consisting of a project manager, project engineer, and multi-discipline architectural and engineering staff to produce project design packages of drawings. Periodic travel to other Merrick offices or project site locations may be required. Primary Responsibilities * The designer will work under an engineer producing CAD documents using the basic working knowledge of the CAD software. * Follow defined standards and procedures. * Perform assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed. * Exercise initiative, judgment and knowledge as required in area of responsibility. * Receives initial instructions from a supervisor. Technical work is checked upon completion. * The position requires teamwork skills to effectively interact with other Merrick engineers located in remote offices to support the overall project.
