The US Natural Gas Pipeline Engineering Services department has a career opportunity available for an experienced Mechanical Engineer. Reporting to the Engineering Support Team Lead, this position is responsible for providing mechanical engineering analysis and support to project engineers, project managers and operations personnel. The position is accountable for confirming the adherence to TransCanada's engineering, design, installation, equipment, and piping specifications for operational capital and maintenance projects. Demonstrated experience with applicable governmental, industry, and ASME codes is required. The mechanical engineer will review piping and equipment drawings, evaluate contractor mechanical design packages, and interface with contracted Engineering design firms. Relevant mechanical design experience with piping, valves, pressure vessels, gas transmission equipment, over-pressure protection systems, etc.) within the pipeline, energy, petroleum, or petrochemical industries is highly desired.
Execute and take professional responsibility for mechanical engineering of capital projects for natural gas facilities; Ensure TransCanada's facilities are constructed in accordance with all applicable regulations and company specifications and are reflective of good engineering practices; This includes but not limited to:
Sizing verification and purchase specifications for natural gas compression, jacket water systems, cooling systems, lube oil systems, compressed air systems, storage tanks, auxiliary power unit (APU) generators, fuel gas systems, separators, heat exchangers, pressure relief valves, and other ancillary equipment;
Identify equipment design requirements and review equipment layouts and installation;
Verify heat transfer calculations, flow rate verification, heat dissipation, hydraulic limits, capacity requirements, blowdown volumes, and noise requirements;
Analyze and troubleshoot equipment and piping pulsation and vibration characteristics
Assist in the approval of construction drawings for the installation of subject mechanical systems;
Review of third party engineering firm design calculations, equipment vendor drawings, and material lists;
Review compressor station's ancillary systems performance to ensure operational reliability;
Participate in project design and HAZOP revies;
Collaborate with designer/drafters on project and facility drawing updates;
Provide innovative engineering solutions to solve emergent technical issues;
Participate in Root Cause Analyses, identify causal factors, and propose remedial actions;
Identify remediation alternatives for facility return-to-service needs;
Perform technical reviews of vendor and/or engineering firm proposals, analyses and recommendations;
Solicit internal/external expertise for items outside of core technical capabilities;
Act in the best interest of TransCanada by interacting with internal technical groups and external engineering firms to evaluate and approve mechanical design packages;
Follow and ensure compliance with TransCanada's Practice of Engineering (POE);
Provide technical and professional mentorship to junior level engineers within TransCanada;
Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Education
Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills with the ability to build and maintain effective business relationships to reach company objectives;
Demonstrated ability to initiate change and help others adapt to a continuously changing work environment;
Willingness to travel for work assignments as required;
Experience with applicable industry codes and standards, especially ASME B31.8 and 49CFR192;
Knowledge of rotating equipment and piping vibration testing methods and recommendations;
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
Ability to apply engineering principles, codes, and standards to identify issues, recommend improvements, and implement solutions;
Self-motivated and results-driven;
Strong leadership skills with an aptitude for team building;
Excellent time management skills;
Preference will be given to candidates with a technical aptitude combined with the ability to multi-task within a team environment;
Experience with engineering and project management software applications such as SAP, MS project, Excel, etc.
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution, or equivalent degree with relevant experience;
10 or more of relevant progressive experience;
Mechanical discipline design experience (piping, equipment, vessels, relief valves, etc.) within the pipeline transmission, energy, petroleum, or petrochemical industries is strongly desired;
Candidates should possess Professional Engineering (PE) certification or be currently in the process of obtaining certification.
This position requires candidates to:
Have and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record;
Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home.
