Position Overview

We are an innovative team of engineers and designers that supports projects throughout the company. Our staff leads and collaborates with Kiewit's module fabrication and construction teams to approach construction-driven engineering with a focus on safe, cost effective, and innovative designs that achieve client expectations and further Kiewit's legacy of excellence.


This position will be based out of our Energy Corridor office in Houston, TX

Primary Responsibilities

This position focuses on the design and specification of large aboveground LNG storage tanks of full containment and double containment design. Responsibilities include:

  • Perform tank design calculations.

  • Prepare data sheets, engineering guide drawings, and specifications with sufficient detail to define the equipment scope and technical requirements for inquiry and order of LNG tanks on projects.

  • Specify proper LNG tank materials of construction and inspection and testing requirements.

  • Perform technical bid evaluations for contractor selection.

  • Review vendor documents submitted for review or approval. Act as the communication focal point for appropriate information/data between the vendor, client, and other disciplines.

  • Support construction, commissioning, and startup of LNG tank systems.

  • Develop criteria, guidelines, and best practices for LNG tanks to provide for a safe, efficient, cost-effective, and reliable end product.

  • Train staff members on the fundamentals of LNG tank design.

While the primary focus of the position is for LNG tanks, the candidate will also be used in a similar capacity for non-cryogenic storage tanks used for hydrocarbons and water.


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year college or university.

  • At least 10+ years of experience in tank design specifically in the LNG industry.

  • Intermediate (practical application) to advanced (applied theory) knowledge and application of:

  • Crygenic and non-cryogenic tank design codes including 49 CFR 193, NFPA 59A, API 620, API 625, API 650, and API 653.

  • LNG tank design standards and best practices.

  • Materials selectin, including ASTM materials specifications and materials testing specifications, used in the design and fabrication of LNG tanks.

  • Quality assurance methds and practices for materials and fabrication of LNG tanks.

  • Welding prcesses and practices used for LNG tanks.

  • Manufacturing prcesses and operations from raw material form to fabricated product.

  • Advanced proficiency using API tank design software.

  • Proficiency using AutoCAD (preferred).

  • Strong understanding of underlying engineering principles of best practices.

  • Strong critical thinking skills.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and time management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

  • Commitment to safety, ethics, and integrity.

The purpose of the Mechanical Design Engineer is to assist the Unconventional Completions group in the development of new products, provide support for the existing products, and respond to operations/customer feasibility work. Essential Responsibilities: * Responsible for completion of component and product design within time, financial and technical guidelines established with the detailed assistance and approval of supervisor. * Performs component and system analysis, identifying stress levels, identifying compromises, and articulating technical risk. * Constructs or directs the construction of layouts of possible designs and makes "best choice" recommendations to supervisor. * Direct the completion of manufacturing drawings and working layouts for product designs. Assists drafters/technicians in assembly and lab testing of prototypes. * Designs qualification testing fixtures and test procedures. * Conduct field evaluation of new products and investigate problems associated with existing products. * Draft tech manual documentation of new products with review and approval of supervisor. * Improve product knowledge through increased familiarization with tech and service manuals and hands on experience. * Provide basic technical assistance to worldwide field operations and plant personnel. * Assist in project planning, creating development time and cost estimates. * Initiate purchase requisitions and part manufacture work requests. * Disposition reject tags after sufficient experience gained, as determined by supervisor. * Handles special projects, as assigned. Qualifications/Requirements: * Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Petroleum Engineering with 3+ years mechanical design experience * Demonstrated minimum 3+ years' experience of designing, developing, testing and supporting downhole completion tools. * General understanding of Unconventional Frac Plugs and Frac Sleeve systems are required. * Understanding of basic oilfield practices and applications * Good individual communication skills with good problem solving ability * Should possess good 2D & 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks preferred) * Ability to work "hands on" in a test lab facility * Ability to prepare project plans and be able to provide cost and time to complete the project * The successful candidate must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship * Ability to function collaboratively in a team as both lead and resource is required. * Ability to travel to remote field locations and work under less than ideal environmental conditions occasionally Desired Characteristics: * Prior Project Management experience is a plus. * Ability to conduct dynamic FEA analysis (SolidWorks preferred) * Demonstrated HS&E focus for both observations and problem solving experience is desired * Advanced Excel abilities is a plus.
