As a Fuel Cell Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the complete life cycle of mechanical components within the integrated fuel cell assembly from concept definition, interfaces, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, and operation on the moon. As a part of the Lunar Fuel Cell team, you may work on multiple programs at different stages of maturity to support all fuel cell power system needs in the Lunar business unit.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of mechanical, fluids, thermal, and secondary structure components within a Fuel Cell Balance of Plant (BOP)

  • Define requirements and drive design decisions to meet mission objectives and satisfy requirements while balancing cost, schedule, and risk.

  • Generate 3-D models, component drawings, assembly drawings, and interface control documents.

  • Provide manufacturing and production support including optimizing designs for manufacturability and mentoring other engineers in best practices for DFM

  • Work with suppliers or Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components. Manage suppliers to procure, fabricate, and install flight hardware.

  • Effectively communicate development status, risks, and challenges to management.

  • Generate innovative solutions in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, while demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail.

  • Write cogent and succinct technical memos and devise innovative, intuitive, and fabulous ways to visualize quantitative information.

  • Mentor engineers and perform technical peer reviews.

  • Work with multi-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world-class aerospace hardware.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical subject areas

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in aerospace or automotive industry

  • Extensive experience with Creo and Windchill PLM

  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), drawing generation, and Model-Based Definition

  • Experience designing aerospace primary and/or secondary structure

  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) methodologies for aerospace vehicles

  • Advanced knowledge with aerospace materials and treatments

  • Experience with the principles, concepts, and methods of systems engineering such as concept development, requirement definition, design solution definition, design reviews, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operations

  • Experience executing projects collaboratively in a dynamic work environment while regularly providing imaginative and detailed technical solutions to complex problems.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters of Science (M.S.) in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent Masters of Engineering (M.Eng.)

  • 15+ years of relevant experience in aerospace industry including spacecraft bus, subsystem, or payload design

  • Ability to work independently and drive engineering from conceptual to released engineering

  • Familiarity with standard fabrication, installation, and quality control techniques of piping systems (tube stock, fittings, connections, fasteners, welding, etc.)

  • Experience with interpreting and generating Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)

  • Knowledge of fluid system hardware including valves, regulators and pumps for gaseous fluid systems

  • Knowledge of thermal system hardware such as pumps, cold plates, radiators, valves, heat exchangers, and semi-passive devices like sensors and heaters

  • Experience with rapid development techniques for hardware

  • Experience designing hardware for dynamic launch loads and long-term space environments

  • Experience with agile project management
