Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
The Multiport Systems Mechanical Engineering team is responsible for the development of the next generation da Vinci Surgical System from product concept through market launch. The team is searching for a Mechanical Engineer to work on a cross-functional team to develop and execute designs to support additional audio/visual features for the system.
The Mechanical Engineer is expected to use machine design and analytical skills to conceptualize, develop, and verify new mechanical designs for medical capital equipment. They are responsible for key system components and will interface with suppliers and manufacturing to build high-quality hardware prototypes and productize new designs. The Mechanical Engineer should be capable of making sound decisions when faced with the time constraints and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of research and development. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared required as well as a commitment to product quality.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Designing components and producing mechanical drawings in a government regulated environment
Working within multi-disciplinary teams to define requirements for new and current designs
Ownership of key components or assemblies through multiple product launches to market
Creating and managing design requirements, specifications, failure-modes analysis, and associated verification and validation testing.
Collaborating with vendors, suppliers, quality and manufacturing
Qualifications
Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:
Minimum BSME or similar, with minimum 4 years of relevant experience.
Proficiency using CAD, FEA and CFD simulation tools, and computational analysis (e.g. Matlab) to optimize designs.
Direct experience in complete documentation of designs and release of designs in a rigorous document-control system
Understanding of the basic elements of tolerance analysis when designing mechanical structures and some knowledge of design for manufacturability
Experience in designing and working with machine shops to have fixtures and parts built for quick, prototype evaluation
Detail-oriented in creating reliable systems that harmonize multiple requirements, e.g. structural, thermal, packaging, acoustic, cleanability, ergonomics, user-interface.
Comfortable with all phases of the product development lifecycle including design, implementation, debug, verification, qualification, and transfer
Self-driven with the ability to excel in a high-energy, focused team environment, to maintain a strong sense of shared responsibility and reward, and to make work interesting and intellectually vibrant.
Preferred:
Post-graduate study, MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience preferred.
Experience in growing design maturity for product launches, scalable manufacturing processes, design for reliability, yield, and cost.
Experience in design work on audio/visual enclosures and assemblies
Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams such as industrial design, human factors, clinical engineers, and interaction design.
Solidworks, Matlab, Ansys and Windchill experience.
We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits and equity, and a reasonable pay rate for this position is $112,200 to $161,400. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on the several factors, including employee's location, skills, and experience level.
