Mechanical Engineer

Key Role:

Work with a small, multifunctional team to design, analyze, and procure custom and vendor hardware. Work in all stages of a lifecycle in a development environment with evolving requirements. Apply engineering physics as well as engineering mathematics and materials science principles to supporting the design, analysis, manufacturing, or maintenance of mechanical systems. Develop innovative solutions to complex problems. Work without considerable direction and mentor team members.

Basic Qualifications:

4+ years of experience in an engineering design role
Knowledge of 3D CAD design software, including SolidWorks
Ability to obtain a security clearance
BA or BS degree

Additional Qualifications:

Experience with creating technical drawings
Experience with a gated design process
Experience with new product development
Experience with scoping, designing, and conducting component and subsystem testing
Experience with Source Controlled Drawings and build to specification hardware
Experience with using the Agile framework and the Sprint or Scrum approach to project management
Knowledge of thermal management systems
MA or MS degree

(BNI), Bechtel's government services business, is one of the top providers to departments and agencies of the U.S. and British governments. Its successes include many large, first-of-a-kind projects in government site management, environmental restoration, defense, space, energy, and national and homeland security. This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be a first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy's largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration's largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future. The UPF project has multiple work schedules that are subject to change and may require employees to work overtime, weekends and/or night shift when a business need arises Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable. Role Overview: Assigned to the Construction organization in a Mechanical Field Engineer. Responsible for supporting Field Supervision and Craft personnel with material and technical documentation for permanent plant and temporary construction installations. Responsibilities include, but not limited to: * Assists construction supervision in planning construction methods and procedures. * Coordinates engineering or construction problems with superintendents. * Interprets design engineering drawings and prepares construction working drawings for the use of superintendents as required, including: * Temporary construction facilities. * Field sketches of revisions and additions and preparing "as built" drawings. * Reviews design drawings, study Interference problems and reviewing related vendor drawings and installation instructions. * Prepares or directs preparation of field bulk material purchase requisitions, including estimating the quantities and material takeoffs of the field purchases of materials. * Tracks commodities on quantity tracking systems or other computer database programs as required. * Assists in coordination of vendor material deliveries, storage of materials, expediting and engineering reports related to the schedule. * Prepares projections and schedules for manpower, material and equipment requirements. * Prepares field change notices, extra work orders and back charge notices. * Prepares assigned Project Controls programs. * Reviews project controls documents on progress. Assures the project controls programs are fully automated for use in the field. * Prepares cost estimates and reviews project design and engineering bills of materials to ensure their completeness. * Maintains records of costs and quantity information, evaluates data, prepares applicable reports as requested by project management utilizing established, standardized automation tools * Administers change notices and amendments audits contractor requests for progress payments. * May be required to provide input on employee reviews of assigned subordinate personnel. * Monitors installation of materials and equipment to assure conformance with drawings and specifications. Basic Qualifications: * Level 1: B.S. Degree in Engineering or similar from an accredited program and 1+ years of experience or 7+ years related experience in lieu of degree. * Level 2: B.S. Degree in Engineering or similar from an accredited program and 3+ years of experience or 9+ years related experience in lieu of degree * Must be a US Citizen * Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check, including verification of employment and education * Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to work site. * Must be physically able to conduct field inspections and participate in project walk-downs which may require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, using fall protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE), walking on elevated platforms, walking on uneven surfaces, and maneuvering around very small and/or confined spaces Minimum Qualifications: * Knowledge and experience of DOE, DOD and/or commercial nuclear construction projects is required. * Candidates should be self-starters, highly motivated, requiring little supervision, and able to work well in a team environment. * The candidate should have a good working knowledge of current design codes and standards such as UPC, IBC, SMACNA, ASME, NFPA as well as NQA-1 requirements. * Knowledge of environmental compliance standards required on NNSA/DOE projects.
