Mechanical Designer under the technical direction of the Chief Engineer and the responsible engineer/scientist, you will design and provide fabrication drawings for particle accelerators using computer aided design software. The assignments you will work on are usually on a project basis, which will require you to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgement to plan, coordinate, and perform your design efforts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- With engineering support, design and provide fabrication drawings for particle detectors, their support structures, tooling (for installation) and facilities drawings
- Support design and safety reviews.
- Prepare and document fabrication drawings.
- Support fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and other technical staff.
- Independently plan, coordinate, and execute assignments.
Skillset required:
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Education and Experience Years: Bachelor’s degree in a technical field plus 6 years’ relevant work experience,
- OR associate degree in a technical field and 10 years relevant work experience,
- OR Associate degree in a technical field and 10 years
Significant experience using 3D CAD software (e.g. Inventor and/or Creo) designing mechanical components and systems for fabrication.
- Knowledge of material properties, component choice, manufacturing, installation, and machine shop processes, and dimensioning and tolerances
- Able to perform mechanical design functions independently with general direction and review by a mechanical engineer or scientist
- Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing/machine shop processes, welding, and GD&T (Geometric dimensioning and tolerances)
- Able to create accurate and detailed 3D system designs as well as mechanical manufacturing drawings to ANSI Y14.5 standards
- Able to review and check the work efforts of other design personnel.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Able to follow ASME Y14.5, as well as laboratory standards for detector design, magnet design, vacuum chamber, welding, fabrication, and assembly
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
- Experience with AutoCAD
- Good communication, interpersonal and time management skills
