MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER - GROUP LEAD

Southern Research is looking for an energetic, self-motivated, and innovative individual for a Mechanical Engineering Group Leader who will lead and develop talented junior staff. The Mechanical Engineering Group Leader will demonstrate the successful delivery of detailed mechanical design packages on medium to large projects as well as cultivate young engineers by encouraging professional development. In addition to the basic qualifications listed below, this individual needs to possess the skills required to successfully develop and execute project tasks and deliverables, be a collaborative team player, handle multiple complex tasks, allocate and manage staff, and have a strong drive to deliver a quality project for customers. The Senior Mechanical Engineer is an experienced and innovative Group Lead Mechanical Engineer with direct experience in the aerospace industry who will be involved in new product design and development. This position has extensive experience (15+ years) leading a team, complemented by experience in design and hands-on assembly of advanced mechanical systems from concept to first article production
Promote mechanical engineering and define the direction of the discipline within the industry
Mentor engineering staff
Direct project assignments and hire new group members as required
Develop overall Conceptual and Basis of Design level design approaches and documentation
Lead the design, development, and analysis of:
Complex mechanical systems
Applies engineering concepts, theories, and practices in creative and innovative ways.
Interface with the electrical and software engineering teams and designers.
Participation in project planning and project development schedules, and brainstorming sessions.
Clarify and/or define product/system requirements and translate into mechanical design requirements.
Assist identification and qualifying of suppliers.
Component selection for stabilized motion-controlled systems.
Participation in assembly and acceptance testing of prototype designs.
Prepare and present reports to clients and peers.
Meet project goals within time and cost constraints.
Participation in proposal development.
Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
U.S. Citizen with ability to obtain/maintain Top Secret Security Clearance
Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline with 15 years of relevant experience or Master's in relevant discipline with 12 years of relevant experience.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in supervision of mechanical engineers and designers
Proficiency in SolidWorks.
Experience with Zemax or other ray tracing code.
Design for manufacturability experience.
Travel up to 20% of the time required.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations
Active Top Secret security clearance or ability to obtain TS.
