Education and Work Experience: Requirements
Minimum of a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and >5 years of related experience
Technical experience in the following areas:
Precision Opto-mechanical part design
Machined part design
Sheet metal part design
Geometric tolerancing and design for manufacturability
Knowledge of vacuum and/or sealed systems
Knowledge of heat transfer
Knowledge of vibration systems
Basic knowledge of optics
Education and Work Experience: Additional Qualifications
Be self-motivated with the ability to meet deadlines.
Project team member training and experience
Proven written and verbal communication skills. Competence with Microsoft office products (Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel, etc)
Experience designing free space lasers, laser systems or other high precision, high stability components and assemblies.
High accuracy in work and attention to detail.
FEA experience analyzing for thermal, structural, vibration, and flow.
Experience with Solidworks EPDM or other document vault program/procedure.
Experience with Agile for document control.
Mechanical Design Engineer Senior
Coherent is a world leader of lasers and laser-based technology for materials processing, microelectronics, scientific, life sciences and medical customers. Coherent's Research Laser Systems business delivers products and technologies focused on pushing the frontiers of fundamental science and scientific research.
We are looking for a senior level mechanical engineer reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager in Coherent's Research Laser System business unit. This position will help support product development in Coherent's scientific ultrafast laser products. In this position you will work closely with many facets of the organization including Program Management, Optical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Manufacturing, Customer Service, Marketing, NPI, etc. This position is ideally suited for inherently curious, hands-on engineers that can manage all aspects of product development (from concept to production support) from a position of technical leadership. The successful engineer will be challenged in developing highly competitive products working with the latest ultrafast and solid state technologies.
Design and develop precision opto-mechanical laser platforms, assemblies, sub-assemblies, components and packaging for ultrafast laser systems.
Responsible for all mechanical designs, drawings, and revision control from prototyping to final product.
Maintain "best in class" documentation including mechanical Bills of Materials and part number information control.
Drive mechanical engineering design reviews
Must be able to perform in a distributed, diverse cross-functional team environment.
Participate in product development teams as the primary mechanical design resource.
Lead projects that have a high mechanical and opto-mechanical design content.
Participate in weekly and bi-weekly status reporting to functional and project management. Clearly communicate project requirements and status
Facilitate optical design development by providing mechanical engineering input and support
Must have good engineering judgment and work independently making sound mechanical engineering decisions.
Provide technical leadership in the design of opto-mechanical assemblies, molded parts, machined parts and tooling.
Set design standards for the tolerancing, CAD drawing formats, and document control of CAD drawings.
Qualify and act as an engineering liaison to key outside vendors (machine shops, PCB houses, etc.)
Learn about existing products and develop technical expertise
Act as a point of contact with Production on the transfer of new mechanical designs to manufacturing for methods, and manufacturing specific tooling
Perform first article assembly and design verification testing.
Design and develop product while keeping manufacturability, cost, reliability and quality in mind.
Significant emphasis on design requiring innovative, intuitive, creative problem solving based on sound mechanical principles and understanding of materials, heat flow, vibration, fluid dynamics, etc.
Support design concepts with hand calculations, FEA, etc.
Investigate, create, and/or develop solutions that will improve design solutions or reduce cost
Understand and follow strict safety procedures
