At Aircapture we're creating technology to solve what we believe to be our lifetime's most pressing challenge: the climate crisis. We supply commercial and industrial customers with clean CO2 captured from our atmosphere to radically improve the environment, our economy, and our lives. We value building a team of people who represent diverse backgrounds-be it thought, education, gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation-to reach our goals. Thank you for considering us.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Aircapture, you will take the designs of our novel Direct Air Capture "DAC" systems and optimize them for scale, manufacturability, and commercialization. You have a robust portfolio of projects that you have helped turn into commercial products, and expertise in how to deploy designs into the field, particularly with containerized systems. This role is onsite at our development and production facility in Berkeley, California. If you are excited to have a major impact at a groundbreaking climate technology startup, this is the role for you!

Please Note-due to the requirements of our federal contracts, we can only hire a U.S. Citizen for this role.

What You'll Do Here

  • Optimize designs of our DAC systems for scale and manufacturability, leveraging tools such as Design for Manufacturability, Assembly and Scalability analyses

  • Collaborate closely with the Mechanical Engineering and FEED teams as you work on process design and process optimization, design for scale up, cost model development and containerized systems

  • Work extensively on a DOE DAC Hub grant, pioneering direct air capture solutions that can be scaled to make a measurable impact on the climate crisis

  • Partner with an awesome team of motivated, fun, smart humans who are excited to be here and do this important work

Your Skills and Abilities Include

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience, Master's degree a plus

  • 6+ years of mechanical design experience, including machine design, pneumatics, sealing, steam distribution and containerized systems

  • Experience integrating equipment into standardized, mass-transport compatible configurations, specifically ISO shipping containers

  • Knowledge and experience designing for scale up

  • Experience in thermal design and heat transfer, leveraging FEA and other applicable tools

  • Working knowledge of heat exchangers, vacuum technology, fans, chillers, heat pumps

  • Outstanding collaborative abilities: You love working side by side with a team of creative engineers

  • Advanced knowledge of 3D CAD (Solidworks), good knowledge of 3D modeling, FEA, and generation of detailed drawings

  • Ability to guide our team of technicians through the prototyping and testing process (hands on experience here is a big plus)

This position requires physical activities including climbing stairs or ladders, stooping, crouching to work on equipment, operating machinery and lifting and carrying loads of 40 lbs or more.

Aircapture strives to create a safe, inclusive, equitable and diverse workplace. Every teammate adds to who we are, diversifying our ideas, experiences and viewpoints and makes us stronger. We hope you feel welcome here.
