Join the Park Authority and our nationally recognized team of professionals! This position works as part of one of the most highly regarded park systems in the country. With more than 25,000 acres of parkland, nine RECenters, eight golf courses, three lakefront parks, and more, FCPA is an exciting organization to be a part of and there are many opportunities for staff to make a difference at every level.

Under supervision, this position performs the maintenance and repair of over 75 pieces of specialized golf maintenance equipment. Which includes utility tractors, utility vehicles, reel mowers, rotary mowers, aerators, 2 stroke and 4 stroke small engines and various other types of equipment. Provides high level diagnostic and repair services to all makes and models of grounds equipment both at the shop and in the field when emergency repairs and maintenance is required. Removes and tears down components and assemblies, such as engines, transmissions, electrical systems, reassembles and test repairs. Changes tires on all types of equipment. Operates equipment once serviced to determine if equipment is properly repaired and safe to operate. Procures parts and supplies using a county procurement card or purchase order. Follows all listed preventive maintenance and safety inspection requirements. Maintains shop inside and outside for organization and cleanliness for safety.

Illustrative Duties

  • Performs the most difficult diagnoses and repairs of mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, trailers, off-road equipment, motorcycles, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment;

  • Removes and tears down components and assemblies, such as engines, automatic transmissions, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and power trains, then rebuilds, adjusts, reinstalls, aligns, and meshes such components and assemblies;

  • May supervise work of lower level employees;

  • May act as lead in supervisor's absence;

  • May serve as coach and mentor for Vehicle Service Tech I;

  • Assists lower level employees in diagnosing and tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in the diagnosis, adjustment and repair of all assigned vehicles and equipment systems;

  • Extensive knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;

  • Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates;

  • Ability to coach, counsel, train and evaluate employee performance to include safety policies, procedures and practices;

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other County employees;

  • Ability to learn job related technical information, and to communicate such information to co-workers.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") completion of the tenth grade plus four years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above the high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 5 years of experience in diagnosis and repair of electrical circuits of engines of various types (gas, diesel, and electric).

  • At least 5 years of experience of diagnosis and repair of small engines. 2 stroke and 4 stroke.

  • At least 5 years of experience in diagnosis and repair of gasoline & diesel engines and their systems which may include transmissions, hydraulic systems, CVT systems.

  • Experience rebuilding, grinding and maintaining reel mowers and be knives.

  • Experience using service manuals and reading schematics of given system.

  • Ability to test drive various equipment with manual transmission.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

Driver's license (required)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 50 lbs., frequently; ability to spend extended periods of time standing; ability to bend, twist, turn and reach, ability to work in environments with exposure to dust and noxious fumes. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
