The City of Virginia Beach Fleet Management Ambulance Shop is hiring a Mechanic Technician II (G.22 $47,565.90 - $73,727.15) or Mechanic Technician III (G.25 $55,063.50 - $85,348.43), depending on the qualifications.

  • Starting salary is the minimum of the pay range*

Representative work duties include but are not limited to:

  • Perform preventive maintenance as per Preventive Maintenance Checklist, such as engine oil changes, lubrication, fuel filters, transmission service, differential service, battery service, and cooling system service.

  • Perform tune-ups, tire repair/replacement/balancing, hydraulic, brake and compressed air system repairs.

  • Perform more complex repairs such as engine, transmission, differential, HVAC systems, suspension & steering systems, alignments, and cooling systems, including replacement of water pumps, radiators, and hoses.

  • Perform basic and advanced electrical/electronic system diagnosis and repairs.

  • Perform State Inspections if licensed.

Please Note: This position requires the incumbent obtain a valid 609 Refrigerant Recovery Certification within the first year of employment (the probationary period).

THIS IS AN ALPHA I POSITION REQUIRING THE EMPLOYEE TO REPORT DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER EVENTS AND OTHER EMERGENCY OPERATING CONDITIONS.

Supplemental Pay: Employees may be eligible to receive up to $3,500 annually in stipends for certifications and licensure related to the position.

  • Annual supplemental pay for stipends is paid across 26 pay periods and include: Up to $2,500 annually for Mechanics that maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications.
  • A $1,000 annual stipend for Mechanics that maintain a Virginia State Inspector's License.

All supplemental pay is included in the hourly rate when compensated for overtime hours worked during a pay period.

CDL Hiring Bonus: Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $2000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:

  • $500 with first paycheck
  • $500 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
  • $1000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
