A Mechanic is responsible for investigating problems with different types of motor vehicles and making repairs accordingly. Their duties include communicating with vehicle operators to discuss their concerns, carrying out routine maintenance procedures on motor vehicles and replacing parts on motor vehicles to promote their functionality.

The Technician is responsible for overseeing scheduled and non-scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs to fleet vehicles and equipment including trucks, automobiles and off-road equipment. They are to conduct inspections using specific procedures set by Company and State requirements; ensure quality control and evaluation of preventive maintenance and repair services; assist with fleet maintenance and related services in a manner to ensure the safety of our passengers and the people. A Technician is to assist with quality diagnostics, adjusting, repairing, overhauling of buses and/or repairing various types of gasoline and CNG engines.

The position follows a typical work week, but it is anticipated that the Technician may work longer than 40 hours as the position is one of a professional nature where accomplishment and execution take precedent over specific hours.

Pay Rate: $26.00 per hour

Working Conditions:

Normal shop environment, spending approximately 10% of time away from the shop. Travel includes but is not limited to visits to other Cedar Bus locations, meetings with Cedar Bus customers, organizational partners and clients.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of repairs, maintenance, installations, replacements, preventative maintenance and diagnostic tasks for Buses/Units, Diesel, Gasoline and CNG Engines in addition to equipment in an efficient, timely, accurate, professional and safe manner.

  • Responsible for knowledge of specified manufacturers restorations and/or accepted industry practices.

  • Utilizes electronic and computerized test equipment to locate, diagnose and correct systems' malfunctions.

  • Performs minor diagnostics and mechanical work on suspension and chassis systems, heating and air conditioning, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, and other systems.

  • Assists Lead Technician with repairs and adjustments to wheelchair lift and related equipment; also building and grounds machinery, tools, and equipment.

  • Responsible for accurately completing all paperwork including repair information on work orders, information for state and emission inspections, etc.

  • Dedication and adherence to all company and industry safety standards, by providing exceptional service and attention to detail.

  • Perform related tasks and other duties as assigned.

Job Tasks Descriptions

  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections and repairs. Rearrange the work schedules in order to accommodate work order schedule and employee absences.

  • Complete required forms and paperwork for fleet maintenance shop including, but not limited to, repair orders, inspection forms, etc.

  • Perform major and minor electrical and mechanical repairs to both gas and diesel vehicles. Conduct preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment. This includes but is not limited to air and exhaust systems, brake systems, fuel systems, pumps and related parts, transmissions, etc.

  • Perform inspections of vehicles as required by Department of Transportation (DOT), Perform preventive maintenance inspections as required and specified by vehicle manufacturers and department standards.

  • Ensure shop safety and cleanliness and abide by safety policies. Identify safety hazards and report unsafe conditions to supervisor.

  • Track time worked on each vehicle by type of repair and using standard time estimates based on industry standards. Identify and respond to inquiries where actual times vary from estimated times. Complete appropriate reporting on vehicle repairs and maintenance to supervisor.

  • Schedule and arrange for outsourcing of repairs if necessary.

  • Respond to service calls.

  • Road test vehicles to verify complaints and/or repairs. Collaborate as necessary with technicians regarding issues or repairs.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Criminal background check required for hire.

  • Valid New York State driver's license.

  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) with Class A endorsement.

  • ASE Heavy Duty Truck Certification, preferred

  • Oral and written communication skills.

  • English language skills.

  • Interpersonal relations skills.

  • Customer service and public relations skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Ability to promote and follow policies and building and department procedures.

  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.

Valued but not required Skills and Experience:

  • Applicable industry experience

  • First Aid qualified

  • Possible relocation may be required based on business requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, completion of G.E.D., or equivalent vocational school or short-term courses in automotive repairs. Completion of 2-year automotive trade school.

  • More than four years and up to and including five years of experience in repair and service of diesel engine and medium duty truck. Lead or supervisory experience strongly preferred.

  • 6 ASE certifications, preferred

  • Computer experience required, creating spreadsheets and reports using Microsoft Software Programs

  • English language required (bilingual in Spanish desirable)

  • Valid driver's license
