The hourly rate advertised represents Step 1 through Step 10 on the pay table.

The hourly rate offered depends on qualifications.

Additional compensation includes a monthly tool allowance.

Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Fleet Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

With a supervisory recommendation and Department Director approval, a Mechanic Level 1 who meets the required qualifications for a Mechanic Level 2 position is eligible for automatic promotion to the Mechanic Level 2 position pursuant to the City of Alamogordo's Human Resources Administrative Policy 2019-002.

Required:

  • High school graduation or its GED equivalent;

  • Two (2) years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance;

  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;

  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Required within sixty (60) days:

  • OSHA-complaint Forklift certification.

Required within six (6) months:

  • One (1) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification (Ford STARS certification may be considered as a substitute for ASE).

Desired:

  • Graduate of a formal technical school in a related field.

  • Efficiently and effectively performs mechanical tasks to ensure that City vehicles and equipment are in good working condition, reliable, and safe for their operators;

  • Plans work procedures using charts, technical manuals, and experience;

  • Inspects vehicles and equipment; performs repairs; communicates observations and makes recommendations to the manager as needed;

  • Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, oil changes, battery checks, tire and lubrication checks, and other preventive maintenance;

  • Repairs and maintains vehicle air conditioning units and cooling systems, including radiators, compressors, water pumps, thermostats, and belts;

  • Troubleshoots and repairs vehicle ignition and electrical systems, including wiring, solenoid relays, and alternators;

  • Repairs and maintains braking systems, including master cylinders, rotors, brake pads, and drums;

  • Repairs and maintains vehicle fuel systems, including fuel pumps, fuel filters, fuel lines, fuel gauges, and fuel injectors;

  • Performs vehicle suspension repairs and tire balancing;

  • Services automotive drivetrains, electrical, cooling, and fuel systems, hydraulics, engines, transmissions, and control valves on vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, compactors, scrapers, bulldozers, rubber tire loaders, tractors, water trucks, motor graders, and pickup trucks; may perform bodywork as needed;

  • Diagnoses engine and mechanical problems and needed repairs on vehicles and equipment;

  • Maintains tools, equipment, and related devices used in testing and recording vehicle performance data;

  • Maintains and uses all safety and protective devices on all equipment and tools and personal safety equipment provided; knows and practices safe working procedures;

  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment used to perform mechanical tasks;

  • Completes and submits accurate work orders;

  • On a daily basis, responsible for cleaning up after oneself and performing janitorial duties to ensure that the work area and shop are maintained in a safe, neat, clean, and orderly condition; participates in keeping the common areas clean and immediately reports any concerns about workplace cleanliness or items that are damaged, broken, or missing to the manager;

  • Maintains current knowledge of safety-related regulations and industry-related technology and methods; 

  • Provides support to other Fleet mechanics as directed;

  • With proper certification, safely operates a forklift;

  • Safely operates City vehicles and equipment;

  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;

  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and

  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES

  • Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);

  • Required to perform on-call rotation duties outside of normal work hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays;

  • Occasional non-traditional work hours may be necessary during evenings, weekends, and on holidays for emergency calls;

  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and

  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of effective customer service;

  • Processes and techniques to effectively repair and maintain City vehicles and equipment;

  • Safe operation of automotive, light, and heavy equipment;

  • Repair of gasoline and/or diesel engines; and

  • Job-related O.S.H.A. requirements.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; understand and follow instructions;

  • Perform tasks and other daily activities in a positive and professional manner alongside employees of varied backgrounds and personalities;

  • Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position's essential duties and responsibilities;

  • Exercise common sense and good judgment in the performance of essential duties;            

  • Read and understand wiring diagrams and electrical circuits;

  • Work with a variety of hand and power tools; operate diagnostic equipment;

  • Operate a computer using standard City software; type accurately and enter data at a speed that allows work to be completed timely;

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work;

  • Demonstrate professionalism and tact with the public; respond quickly and positively to customer complaints; maintain professionalism under pressure;

  • Work proficiently without direct supervision;

  • Manage simultaneous tasks and projects, and meet multiple deadlines;

  • Analyze problems; identify, recommend, and implement solutions;

  • Learn City of Alamogordo Ordinances, City-wide and Departmental Policies and Procedures, and any other applicable laws regulated by an outside authority; and

  • Provide excellent customer service to ensure high operational and service standards are met and maintained for the citizens of Alamogordo.

  • Work is typically performed both indoors and outdoors and may be subject to inclement weather conditions;

  • Daily strenuous physical labor that includes extended periods of walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, climbing, lifting heavy parts/objects, and using tools and equipment; may be subject to repetitive motion;

  • Work will be performed near moving mechanical parts; risk of physical injury;

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud;

  • May be exposed to hazardous traffic conditions as well as hazardous chemicals, contaminants, pathogens, toxins, pollutants, or allergens which can adversely affect the skin and/or the respiratory system, such as gases, smoke, odors, mists, fumes, dust, pollen, oils, and solvents;

  • Hazards include exposure to insects, rodents, snakes, and other wildlife typical of the southwest;

  • Terrain may be uneven or undeveloped;

  • Lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any object greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects, materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds requires the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight; and

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments, including protective footwear, marked by the manufacturer, with a minimum standard of M/F I/75/C75, 6" ankle height work boots or M/F I/75/C75 work shoes, per current ASTM F2413 standard.
