Description
The purpose of this position is to provide inspections, diagnosis and repairs of all gasoline and diesel equipment for the City of Spartanburg and is responsible for inspection and testing of malfunctioning equipment.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Examples of Duties
Diagnoses and repairs various types of gasoline and diesel equipment which includes small gas engines, electrical systems, etc.
Overhauls all major components which include engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, air conditioning units, differentials, etc.
Repairs and rebuilds carburetors, front ends, alternators, and hydraulic systems.
Performs major tune-ups for diesel engines, replacing and checking injectors, adjusting valves and timing on engines.
Performs minor welding tasks as needed.
Services and performs preventive maintenance on city-owned vehicles which includes checking all fluid levels, changing oil and filters, checking and rotating tires, repairing lights, etc.
Conducts inspections on vehicles.
Checks brakes and replaces shoes, pads, wheel cylinders, master cylinders; turns drums and rotors as needed, etc.
Utilizes brake lathe, electrical tester, engine analyzer, mechanics tools, battery and alternator, etc., in repairing diagnosing, and performing preventive maintenance work on city-owned vehicles and equipment.
Makes road calls as needed.
Delivers and picks up vehicles.
Receives and handles complaints providing assistance, information, and solutions as needed.
Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Vocational or technical school graduate or equivalent.
Three (3) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Automotive and Diesel Mechanic Certification.
Commercial Driver's License required.
