Job Description:

Responsible for maintaining district light/medium/heavy duty diesel and gas powered school buses, warehouse trucks and support vehicles including snow removal equipment, and conforming to federal, Department of Transportation (DOT), Colorado Department of Education (CDE), manufacturer maintenance specifications and Douglas County School District rules, regulations and guidelines per Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). May assist with translation and/or communication using second language skills when possible. CDE Inspector certification from previous employment or previously obtained through the district while working through the apprentice position.

Position Specific Information (if Applicable):

Responsibilities:

  • -- Perform inspections of vehicles as required by DOT, CDE, FMVSS and FMCSR. Perform preventive maintenance inspections required and specified by vehicle manufacturer and departmental standards. Inspections include checks on all systems, oil change, lube, transmission service, etc.
  • -- Identify, repair, adjust and troubleshoot air systems including air compressors, air dryers, air lines, governors, air valves, relay valves, check valves and safety valves. Perform CDE annual air system performance checks.
  • -- Inspect and service air and hydraulic brake systems (Antilock Brake System (ABS) and standard). Repair, and troubleshoot all components of the brake system including brake shoes, pads, drums, rotors, bearings, warning systems (lights and buzzers) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM) operation. Perform safety checks on the park and emergency brake system. Check the calipers, wheel cylinders, vacuum and hydraulic power assist, line hoses, s-cams and slack adjusters
  • -- Troubleshoot air conditioning systems, repair engine transmissions, ABS brakes, batteries, electrical systems, wiring problems, electrical and mechanical problems and faults by using diagnostic equipment including DVOM multi-meter, PC based software, laptops and hand-held scanners.
  • -- Inspect rear axle and repair or replace springs, air suspension, air bags, spring hangers, spring pins and bushings, torque rods, swing arms, line, hoses, hubs, driveline u-joints, axle shaft, seals, bearings, shocks differentials or gears as needed.
  • -- Inspect front-end and repair or replace ball joints, kingpins, steering links, tie rods, drag links, steering gear, steering wheels, steering shafts, power steering pump, hoses, shocks, springs, spring hangers, shackles, spring pins and bushings. Adjust ride height and perform front-end alignments as needed.
  • -- Inspect air and exhaust systems and repair, or troubleshoot turbochargers, air to air after coolers, manifolds, plumbing and piping for exhaust system safety check and modifications as needed.
  • -- Inspect fuel system and repair, or troubleshoot pumps, injectors, injection pumps, mechanical/electronic controls, throttle body assemblies, line, hoses, tanks and safety cage as needed.
  • -- Inspect automatic and standard transmissions and repair, replace or troubleshoot hydraulic pressure and shift problems, seals, pumps, valve bodies, clutches, bearings, electronic problems, clutches, linkage and flywheel as needed.
  • -- Complete gas and diesel emission tests per Colorado Department of Public Health and Environmental Air Pollution Control Division. Analyze, troubleshoot and repair vehicle emission failures.
  • -- Fabricate, modify and redesign flaws in vehicle designs. Repair sheet metal and make minor body repairs.
  • -- Inspect diesel and gas engines and repair, or replace cylinder heads, gaskets, valves, rocker arms, push rods, pistons, rings, cam shafts, bearings, gears, water pumps, fly wheels, oil coolers, crankshafts and bearings as needed.
  • -- Service district generators, or replace cylinder heads, gaskets, valves, rocker arms, push rods, pistons, rings, cam shafts, bearings, gears, water pumps, fly wheels, oil coolers, crankshafts and bearings as needed. Remove engine.
  • -- Perform other duties as assigned.

High School or Equivalent

  • All salary amounts listed above are based on a full-time (1.0) FTE. If applicable, part-time salaries will be prorated according to the assigned FTE.
