The purpose of this position is to perform skilled work to inspect, test, maintain, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and specialized and emergency supplies, materials, and equipment for vehicles and equipment assigned to the Fire Rescue department.

  • Performs tests and inspections of all Fire/EMS vehicles in accordance with federal guidelines; tests equipment to check for malfunctions and determine corrective measures to be applied; utilizes diagnostic equipment; determines whether to remove unit from service for repair or replacement; and maintains required documentation.

  • Performs preventive maintenance; develops preventive maintenance schedules; performs maintenance activities which may include checking/replacing fluid levels, changing/replacing filters, lubricating mechanical parts, installing/replacing blades, replacing belts/hoses, checking batteries, calibrating equipment, and performing tune-ups; and maintains related documentation.

  • Performs repairs; troubleshoots equipment malfunctions; determines needed repairs which may include dismantling, overhauling, repairing, rebuilding, replacing, and reassembling electrical, hydraulic, and other equipment; may perform repairs in the field and at fire scenes; coordinates warranty repairs with manufacturers; and maintains related documentation.

  • Analyzes and determines costs of vehicle specifications, repairs, and parts.

  • Performs welding/fabrication work associated with general repair and maintenance of equipment; welds metal parts together; repairs broken or cracked parts; fills holes; and fabricates special parts.

  • Maintains inventories of supplies, forms, and equipment; ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities; prepares purchase requisitions for needed materials, equipment, and supplies; communicates with vendors regarding tools, parts, and components; and receives and stores incoming supply shipments.

  • Ensures adherence to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing Identifix, Google, Microsoft Outlook, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

  • Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments; operates and maintains operates various trucks and trailers, chain hoist, drill press, welder, grinder, air compressor, and other power or motorized equipment.

  • Communicates with supervisor, parts distributors, vendors, department personnel, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of related experience in equipment and vehicle maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate's Degree in Equipment or Mechanical Repair or related field preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License, including appropriate endorsements; may be required to obtain and maintain certifications through manufacturers or other entities.

  • Knowledge of local government operations, equipment maintenance related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.

  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.

  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evening meetings.

  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.

  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.

  • Ability to work with and process payments for accounts within the budget and department.

  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting purposes.

  • Ability to operate a copying machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or bright/dim lights.
