Primary Purpose:
Perform minor mechanical repairs with minimum supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.
Qualifications:

Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Ability to drive and operate a bus and other district vehicles
Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engineer maintenance and repair
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to pass a pre-employment and random U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repair:
Complete all repairs and work orders on time and to the standards or written publications.
Evaluate mechanical problems in all vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
Help mechanics evaluate minor mechanical issues. Inspect repairs completed by mechanics.
Respond to roadside malfunctions and make repairs on-site or conduct proper towing/recovery operations.
Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems, including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.
Check and repair electrical and cooling systems.
Install heaters and similar accessories.
Perform welding and minor bodywork.
Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care and maintain accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.
Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
Responsible for assisting with inventories of assigned tools and equipment.
Communicate frequently and timely with Lead Technician to inform them of the status of jobs in the shop.
Safety:
Must adhere to all procedures to ensure safe shop operations.
Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
Assist in keeping shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
Correct unsafe conditions in work areas and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
Must wear an assigned uniform (no shorts), and safety-toe shoes are required.
Other Duties:
Serves as substitute bus driver or monitor as needed and must perform all duties and functions of these positions.
Comply with district policies as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
General knowledge of two-way radio and camera system.

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; ladders.
Posture: Frequent standing, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Constant walking, climbing; frequent grasping/squeezing; wrist flexion/extension, and overhead reaching; moderate driving; climbing and working on ladders (20 ft); pushing
Lifting: Frequent heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying (50 pounds and over) daily; occasional lifting and moving (100 pounds)
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, fumes, airborne particles, noise, vibration, and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may operate in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; vision abilities for close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus during the hours of daylight and darkness.

Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Ability to obtain and maintain clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
Acceptable driving record in accordance to Texas Education Agency and Department of Public Safety standards
Possess or able to obtain a State of Texas Inspection License
Complete Texas School Bus Driver Certification Course (20 hours) upon hire
Complete Texas School Bus Driver Refresher Course (8 hours) every three years
