JOB SUMMARY:

Mechanic I: Under direct supervision, performs preventive maintenance on city equipment, and performs various road service calls, assists on minor repairs, and performs basic shop maintenance.

Mechanic II: Under general supervision, performs major repairs on light and heavy-duty city vehicles and equipment. Performs various road service calls, assists other technicians as needed, and performs basic shop maintenance.

Mechanic III: Under minimal supervision, performs major repairs on light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel city vehicles and equipment. Assists coworkers on technical diagnosis, performs various road service calls and performs basic shop maintenance as needed.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mechanic I:

1.Performs basic preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance.

2.Performs road service calls and delivers vehicles as needed.

3.Uses all shop equipment to perform basic maintenance.

4.Sweeps and cleans shop area; puts up stock if needed.

5.Performs basic grounds maintenance of building.

6.Performs additional tasks related the position as assigned by supervisor and or Chief Mechanic.

Additional Duties for Mechanic II:

1.Performs major repairs on city equipment including vehicles and construction equipment, gasoline, and diesel engines.

2.Inspects, overhauls, exchanges or repairs brakes, automatic transmissions, steering, ignition systems, fuel systems,drive lines, differentials, transfer cases, electrical and computerized systems, and suspensions.

3.Performs preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance (tune-ups, oil service, tires, belts, hoses, etc.)

4.Installs and maintains emergency equipment in police vehicles (prisoner cages, shotgun racks, etc.) and assists in the maintenance of Fire Apparatus and MICU units.

5.Performs diagnostics and repair to vehicle fuel delivery systems both carbureted and injected and performs diagnostics and repair and recovery on HVAC systems.

6.Performs major road service calls and delivers vehicles and installs snow chains and sanding equipment as needed.

7.Sweeps and cleans shop area; puts up stock as needed and performs basic shop maintenance as required.

8.Performs additional tasks assigned by supervisor and or chief mechanic.

Additional Duties for Mechanic III:

1.Works on vehicle and equipment repairs requiring a high level of technical knowledge and performs major overhauls and repairs on both light and heavy duty, gasoline and diesel engines and city equipment.

2.Inspects, overhauls, exchanges or repairs airbrakes, heavy-duty and light-duty automatics, differentials, transfer cases,drive lines, steering, suspensions, ignitions, electrical and computerized systems, fuel systems, etc.

3.Performs basic preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance (tune-ups, oil service, tires, belts, hoses, etc.) and performs diagnostic and repair to vehicle and equipment fuel delivery systems, both carbureted and injected.

4.Installs and maintains emergency equipment in police and fire trucks.

5.Performs diagnostics and repair and recovery of HVAC systems.

6.Installs snow chains and sanding equipment as needed and performs fabrication work when needed.

7.Performs basic shop maintenance and cleanup as required.

8.Performs additional related tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Mechanic I:

  • Basic knowledge of methods, tools, materials,and equipment used in mechanic work.

  • Basic knowledge of repair methods with good mechanical and technical ability.

  • Basic knowledge of maintenance and repair as related to mechanic work.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work cooperatively with co-workers.

  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at building interpersonal relationships with city staff and the public.

  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment and tools used to maintain City equipment.

  • Ability to learn, and obey safety procedures.

  • Attention to detail is necessary for this position.

Mechanic II - III:

  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of diagnostic and computerized equipment, tools, materials, and equipment used in mechanic work.

  • Advanced knowledge of repair methods with good mechanical and technical ability.

  • Ability to utilize various types of welding equipment, Oxy, MIG, and TIG.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to work cooperatively with co-workers.

  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at building interpersonal relationships with city staff and the public.

  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment and tools used to maintain City equipment.

  • Ability to learn, and obey safety procedures.

  • Attention to detail is necessary for this position.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Mechanic I:

A High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of two (2) years of previous verifiable automotive experience is required. Must obtain a Class "B"license with air brake endorsement within one year of hire date. Must achieve three(3) ASE Automotive Certifications within one (1) year of hire date.

Mechanic II:

High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of five (5) years of previous verifiable automotive and machinery experience is required. Must obtain a Class "B" license with air brake endorsement within 180 days of hire date. Must achieve three (3) additional ASE Automotive Certifications within one (1) year of hire date.

Mechanic III:

High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of eight (8) years of previous verifiable automotive and machinery experience is required. Must obtain a Class "B" license with air brake endorsement within 180 days of hire date. Must achieve three (3) additional ASE Automotive Certifications within one (1) year of hire date.

Additional Minimum Education and Experience Required for Mechanic I-III:

Applicant must be able to pass a general automotive knowledge test and interview panel examination with a minimum score of 80 points.

Must have own hand tools to perform job duties (detailed list must be available at the time of interview). Must be able to function in all types of extreme weather situations.Must possess a professional and groomed appearance, and positive attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 80 lbs. To a distance of up to 15ft.; must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 lbs. To a distance of up to 100 ft.;must be able to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 lbs. To a distance of up to 120 ft. Employee must have sufficient near/far vision to estimate distances, drive, perform repairs, complete paperwork. Employee must access and perform work under vehicle. Employee works in services bay and may be exposed to excessive heat/cold temperatures. Eight (8) plus hours a day; standing is constant.
