The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and repair of County-owned vehicles and equipment.

  • Performs vehicle inspections; inspects and tests vehicle systems, including drive train, engine operation, transmission operation, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical system, HVAC, emissions and other systems; completes or revises work order for repairs; obtains required parts; performs emission tests per frequency and criteria specified by state law; inspects and tests completed work; and updates required records.

  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles; checks and replaces fluids; drains and replaces oil; collects and recovers Freon; changes and replaces filters; lubricates mechanical parts; installs and replaces blades; rotates, mounts, and balances tires; replaces tires, belts, and hoses; checks and replaces batteries; greases equipment; flushes radiators; and performs tune-ups or other preventative maintenance activities as assigned.

  • Performs repairs on vehicles; troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, and/or other defects; gathers information from vehicle operator reports, fault codes, and other diagnostic data; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems; identifies items needing repair; fabricates parts as needed; completes required repairs; verifies parts operate according to specifications; and ensures vehicle operation and performance is within specified limits; makes minor repairs in the field so the vehicle can get back to the shop; performs minor body repairs.

  • Determines materials required for projects; gathers equipment, parts, and supplies; assists in monitoring inventory levels of parts, equipment, tools, or supplies; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.

  • Overhauls, repairs, and maintains engines, motors, motor-powered equipment, component assemblies, and construction and special purpose equipment powered by internal combustion engines.

  • Maintains brake systems, transmissions, ignition systems, rear ends, differential assemblies, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electronic systems, and other related components; maintains wheels and alignment; repairs steering equipment; relines and adjust brakes and clutches.

  • Maintains records and inventories of parts, components, supplies, and materials; processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures; receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards, or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

  • Operates or uses various machinery equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies to complete work assignments; operates and maintains basic mechanics tool kit and other equipment; and performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks on equipment and work areas.

  • Communicates with supervisor, other County employees, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of related experience in automotive maintenance and repair, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associate's Degree in Automotive Repair or related field preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.

Special Requirements:

May be required to work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of local government operations, automotive repair related programs, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.

  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.

  • Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.

  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadlines.

  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.

  • Ability to work with and process payments for accounts within the budget and department.

  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and accounting purposes.

  • Ability to operate a copying machine.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, heights, confined spaces, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, or rude/irate customers.
