Position Summary:

This is skilled, journeyman level mechanical work in the servicing and repair of a variety of automotive and medium and heavy duty equipment. Work involves performing all types of mechanical repair work on trucks and heavy duty construction equipment as well as specialized gasoline and diesel powered equipment, including complex engine repairs, complete overhauls, transmission, brake, and differential repairs. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices, and most assignments performed under general supervision. This position does not directly supervise others however, lead responsibility may be required over persons assisting or learning repair work. Considerable independent judgment is exercised in determining work methods, within accepted departmental and trade guidelines and with careful regard for safe work practices. Work originates upon assignment from a supervisor. Work is reviewed by observation and by inspection of work in progress and upon completion.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Performs major engine repairs including valve jobs, engine overhauls, transmission, and suspension work.

  • Repairs and rebuilds water pumps, differentials, steering assemblies, electrical systems, and other mechanical components on a variety of equipment including crawlers, front-end loaders, and large trucks and skid steers.

  • Inspects and repairs hydraulic equipment and other specialized types of equipment.

  • Performs electrical and acetylene welding as necessary for the fabrication and/or repair of equipment.

  • Maintains records of services and repairs to each piece of equipment.

  • May design and build specialized equipment.

  • Performs some auto body repairs.

  • Performs work on small equipment as needed.

  • Assists Small Engine Mechanic as needed.

  • Performs other work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical work.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation as well as maintenance and repair needs of a variety of types of medium and heavy duty equipment.

  • Ability to read and interpret diagnostic test results, often by using dials, gauges, scan tolls and other computer equipment.

  • Ability to understand diesel exhaust emissions on a variety of medium and large types of equipment.

  • Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and of the safety precautions necessary in the performance of mechanical repair operations.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions as well as the ability to analyze and determine the proper methods for repair of a variety of mechanical problems.

  • Ability to work closely with others.

  • Ability to lead and guide the work of others.

  • Ability to perform complex engine and mechanical repair work on a variety of types of medium and heavy-duty equipment.

  • Considerable skill in performing skilled manual tasks requiring close tolerance and precision adjustments.

  • Considerable skill in the use of equipment repair tools.

  • Considerable skill in the use of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment.

  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that contributes to customer service and teamwork.

Qualifications:

High school graduation or equivalent preferred, supplemented by two years of school in medium and heavy duty maintenance and two years' journeyman level experience in mechanical repair work; OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge and experience in engine electronics on modern equipment desirable.

Necessary Special Qualification:

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin Class A CDL without air brake restrictions OR pass the required Class A CDL written exams and obtain a Class A CDL without restrictions on air brakes within 120 days of hire. New employees failing to meet this CDL requirement may be terminated.

  • Driving record that meets County standards.

  • Final candidates may be required to sign a consent form permitting the County to obtain information from prior employers regarding any positive alcohol and drug tests (including refusals).
