SUMMARY: Emergency Vehicle Group, Inc. is a leading emergency vehicle dealer and service center for fire apparatus, ambulances, command and specialty vehicles that is adding to our service operations.

We are seeking highly skilled heavy truck mechanic to work on fire apparatus, ambulances and other emergency vehicles. Experience with air brakes, heavy truck components, hydraulics, water pumps, and aerial devices, complex electrical systems is expected.

  • Repair and maintain various types of emergency vehicles, such as pumpers, aerials, ambulances and other vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on heavy truck chassis and fire components.
  • Major repairs on fire pumps, aerials, hydraulic systems, air brakes and electrical systems.
  • Travel to customers sites for repairs as needed.
  • Perform work as directed by Service Manager
  • Other duties as assigned and can vary daily
  • Ensures shop cleanliness and maintenance on a regular basis.
  • Processes and tracks repair orders.
  • Performs road tests on vehicles in order to assure roper operating levels.
  • Operates computer to document repair work and maintenance on a daily basis.
  • Monitors and advises all safety related issues related the shop area, vehicles and wherever maintenance is being performed.
  • Available to perform emergency repair work after hours including nights, weekends and holidays.



  • Reads and follows simple to complicated instructions, schematics and other information contained in repair manuals or the diagnosis and repair of fire and EMS vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs calculations and works with numbers to solve problems.
  • Reads and understands reference books and complicated procedures and manuals.
  • Pays attention to detail while ensuring crews observe safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions.
  • Appropriately records repairs and parts used.


  • High School Diploma or GED and 2+ year mechanical repair and maintenance work or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must obtain Class B CDL Drivers License
  • ASE Mechanic certification preferred
  • Must obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT)certification within 1 year of hire date.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical, criminal background and MVR check.


  • Work is performed in an automotive repair shop and on customers sites.
  • May be subject to bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling and lifting such as retrieving and replacing materials, supplies and inventory or when performing preventative maintenance and repair of vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and fumes common to automotive repair shops.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.


  • Operates various emergency vehicles and equipment on an as-needed basis (for testing purposes)
  • Operates computer, copy machine, fax machine, telephone and all shop related equipment as needed.
  • Operates volt ohm meter, ampmeter, pressure gauges, nozzle and valve repair kits, calibrating tools for engines, rakes, micrometers and dial calipers, welders, grinders, torch, brazing rod, precision gauges, inspection and diagnostic equipment.
  • Must have own tools.

VIEW JOBS 11/7/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-02-05T00:00 Description The City of Anaheim Public Works Department is seeking an experienced Vehicle Technician III to perform skilled work at the advanced-journey level in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of fire suppression apparatus, other Fire Department related equipment and vehicles, heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, and other motorized equipment. Fleet Services provides quality and competitive maintenance services to our customers in a timely, environmentally friendly manner. Fleet Services has a 30-member team, operating out of a 47,000 square-foot, 30-bay repair facility. Fleet Services has an annual operating budget of approximately $15 million and is responsible for purchasing and maintaining all of the vehicles and motorized equipment used by the City of Anaheim. The ideal candidate must have five (5) years of experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic diagnosing, repairing, over-hauling, and maintaining vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Candidates must also have a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. Possession of a valid Class "M1" California Driver's License and an ASE Masters certification in Automobile and/or Medium/Heavy Truck is highly desirable. Tank and/or Hazmat endorsement(s) is also highly desirable. The ideal candidate will also have strong customer service values and is eager to work part of a team. Candidates must provide their own basic mechanics hand tools. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: The Vehicle Technician III is the advanced journey level classification in the Vehicle Technician series. Under minimal supervision, incumbents perform the full range of assigned duties and responsibilities. This classification differs from the Vehicle Technician I and II classifications in the skill level required and the complexity of the assigned projects. Additional Compensation Upon Completion of Probationary Period Possession of Mechanic Certification pay as a Master Automobile Technician or Master Heavy-Duty Truck Technician by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence shall be paid in the amount of $200 for each successfully completed exam, with an annual maximum of $2,000 per Master Certification for Auto/Light Series or Medium Heavy-Duty Truck Series. Employees receive an additional $200 for each successfully completed exam for a second Master certification in either Auto/Light Truck series up to a maximum of $4,000 for a dual certification in both Series. Complete details are stated in Articles 58.1, 58.1.1, 58.1.2,58.1.3 and 58.1.4 of the AMEA General MOU. Employees hired to perform duties on Fire Apparatus shall receive fire mechanic certification pay upon Certification as a Fire Mechanic by the California State Fire Marshal. Fire mechanic certification pay will be paid once each fiscal year. Fire mechanic certification pay for level (I) is ($250), level (II) is ($500), level (III) is ($750). Essential Functions The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Lubricate and change oil on all types of light and heavy vehicles and construction equipment. Mount, balance, change, and repair tires and wheels. Clean and/or replace filters as necessary; perform regular maintenance on vehicles & equipment, including "A", "B", "C", and "D" level services as defined by Fleet & Facility Services. As assigned, perform safety inspections, including California Highway Patrol "BIT" inspections on applicable vehicles and equipment. Inspect, repair, and maintain hydraulic and air braking systems on vehicles & equipment; replace friction materials and machining drums/rotors; and diagnose and repair ABS and conventional braking systems. Diagnose, repair, and/or replace fuel, cooling/heating, and electrical systems. Diagnose, repair, and/or replace engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, and drivetrains. Perform maintenance and repair of vehicle heating and air conditioning systems; diagnose and repair leaks; and evacuate and recharge air conditioning systems using proper equipment. As assigned, remove, install, maintain and repair emergency warning systems on vehicles and equipment, including lighting (emergency and other) systems and related components, audio and (sirens, radios, MDC etc.) communications systems and associated components, and equipment such as push bars, prisoner cages, etc. As assigned, remove, install, and maintain add-on equipment such as racks, winches, bumpers, toolboxes, etc. Test drive and perform safety inspections on vehicles and ensure all repairs have been completed. Requisition supplies and parts. Accurately record all maintenance and repairs in computerized fleet management system; make detailed notes on maintenance and repairs in fleet management system. Accurately record all time worked in computerized fleet management system. Utilize technology such as computers and handheld devices to manage workflow, send parts requests, send and receive emails through Microsoft Outlook, etc. Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established policies. Perform emergency repairs out of shop as necessary; may be placed on-call to respond to after hour emergency repair needs. Perform diagnostics on vehicles and equipment, repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions on vehicles & equipment utilizing diagnostic equipment. Diagnose and repair emissions control systems and associated components. As assigned, provide guidance, mentoring, and training to Vehicle Technician I and II incumbents. Perform maintenance and repairs on all types of construction equipment, fire apparatus, and other equipment, including annual and quarterly inspections and pump testing. As assigned, design and fabricate custom or replacement parts and pieces for vehicles and equipment. As assigned, perform maintenance and repairs to equipment, both in the field and in the shop. As assigned, perform diagnosis, maintenance and repair of all types of vehicles and equipment in the field using a service truck. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Qualifications Candidates must have five (5) years of experience as a vehicle and equipment mechanic over-hauling, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Candidates must posses knowledge of automotive principles of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel powered engines, electrical systems, power train and emissions control systems, braking and suspension systems, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) safety related systems, and applicable safety requirements. Principles of hydraulic equipment repair, welding, and fabricating. Methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the overhaul, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of equipment and vehicles including (but not limited to) heavy-duty and specialized equipment, fire apparatus, stationary and portable generators and bucket trucks. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions in vehicles, motorcycles, and equipment. Communicate clearly both orally and in writing; use mechanics hand tools and diagnostic equipment; read, interpret and comprehend various technical manuals and other related materials; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Candidates must be in possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. Possession of a valid Class "A" California Driver's License within six (6) months of appointment. Candidates must also have at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in the area of Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck within six months of date of employment. Tank and/or Hazmat endorsement(s) highly desirable. Possession of a valid Class "M1" California Driver's License is highly desirable.
