Position Summary

With direction from the Zone Manager and Working Supervisor, the Mechanic works with a team of 10-12 multi-craft mechanics to perform routine and emergency rough and finished carpentry and multi-craft maintenance tasks for campus facilities. Additionally, the mechanic works closely with internal customers including students, faculty and staff to resolve requested maintenance issues and work orders. Typical craft-specific work includes but is not limited to the maintenance, installation, repair, and inspection of drywall, frame installation, powered and manual door closers, prepping and painting, windows, and minor concrete repair.

Multi-craft maintenance activities will also include working with various plumbing systems, HVAC, paint and basic carpentry.

This position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:45 AM-4:15 PM

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs drywall, mudding and taping, frame installation/repair, door and frame adjustments, installation and repair of powered and manual door closers, roof inspections/light repairs, prepping and painting room finishes, drop ceiling installation and repair, chalkboard installation and repair, wall mounting A/V hardware, shelving, flooring maintenance and repair (VCT, carpet tile, cove base, etc.), maintenance and repair of various types of windows, minor concrete repair, exterior caulking, and the ability to adjust and reconfigure modular furniture in support of the teaching and research mission of the University.

  • Troubleshooting, repairing and maintenance.

  • Pro-actively identifying, communicating, prioritizing and addressing needs without direction when appropriate.

  • Responding to work orders and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner.

  • Maintain data per departmental policy.

  • Utilizing materials, supplies, tools and other University property in a safe, productive manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:45 AM-4:15 PM.

  • Multi-craft maintenance activities will also include working with various plumbing systems, HVAC, paint and basic carpentry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree from technical school.

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively/appropriately with members of the campus community and other employees within Facilities.

  • Understands the importance of satisfying the needs of the campus community (customer oriented) and providing value to the University.

  • Ability to read and understand blue prints.

  • Must be willing to provide one's own hand tools.

  • Excellent attendance record.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have successfully completed a recognized craft apprenticeship program, a technical school training program (such as a Ranken Technical College two-year certification program) or other equivalent training program.

  • Minimum of five years' experience working in a particular craft or multi-craft position.

  • Must be able to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver's License by the end of the Probationary period and cannot drive University owned vehicles until Class E Driver's License is obtained.

  • This position requires mastery of carpentry skills including Drywall repair, door/frame adjustments, door closers installation/repair, prep/paint room finishes, chalkboard installation/repair, and modular furniture repair.

Salary Range

$36.51

The salary rate for this position is determined by the current union contract. Please note that there may be salary differentials for working second or third shifts.
