The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time MECHANIC, performs lubrication and filter replacements, diagnostics, repairs, and provides general assessment to Lead Mechanic as needed. The purpose of position is to maximize the life of vehicles / equipment and minimize down time.

The MECHANIC earns a competitive hourly salary of $20.58 - $22.27, based on experience. Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Regular and timely attendance at work.

  • Must be able to work around the clock, when on call schedule.

  • Proper housekeeping and positive attitude.

  • Excellent multi-tasking and organization skills

  • Works safely and with appropriate PPE at all times.

  • Plans work procedure in consultation with Lead Mechanic.

  • Perform initial and in-process inspections; perform mechanical diagnostics and troubleshoot to localize defects and determine cause of malfunction; perform mechanical maintenance on defective parts; and perform major body work.

  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear.

  • Overhauls or replaces fueling systems, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.

  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.

  • Change oil; grease fittings; change air, fuel and oil filters.

  • Rotate tires as needed.

  • Inspect vehicle/equipment and report any possible problems for wear.

  • Raise vehicle, with hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.

  • Repair A/C, engine, brakes, driveline, and equipment as needed.

  • Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Two (2) years related experience and/or training preferred.

  • Valid, Class "C" Texas Driver's License

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software.

  • Ability to perform repairs and maintenance for light trucks, dump trucks, excavator, Gradall, mowers, and other construction and vehicular equipment.

  • Ability to actively listen and demonstrate competence and interest to the general public, citizens, and co-workers.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Ability to present a "positive" image of the City at all times.

  • Ability to fulfill requests or otherwise provide services, accurate information or assistance in a courteous and timely manner without complaining.

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools used in automotive and equipment repair.

  • Ability to operate a vehicle, forklift, air tools, wrenches, sockets, tire balancer, brake lathe, screw drivers, hydraulic press, drills, OTC scan tool, car jack, repair manuals, pc, and telephone.
