We are offering Mission Critical Incentive Pay that will be in addition to the base hourly wage and will be thirty percent (30%) of the employee's base hourly rate of pay, less deduction, paid on a biweekly basis. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will have a direct impact on the department mission of "Keeping Alaskans Moving through Service and Infrastructure." SEF's mission is to provide all state agencies with safe, economical vehicles they need to accomplish their mission. Your work will provide assistance in keeping essential vehicles and equipment on our roads and runways to keep Alaskans moving safely around our state.
What you will be doing -
Professionally maintain all heavy equipment associated with the construction and maintenance of highways, secondary roads and rural airports including, but not limited to motor graders, loaders, dump trucks, roller compactors, sand spreaders, backhoes, and tractor-trailer combinations.
This is an advanced journey level mechanic position required to diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of heavy trucks and equipment for the State Fleet. This includes computerized diagnostics and the ability to repair electronic and mechanical systems.
The incumbent must be able to resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods. In a shop or remote setting, the incumbent performs routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment with diverse components and diagnostic requirements. An example of equipment would be motor graders, loaders, trucks of all types, snow blowers, and sanders, often from different manufacturers and wide range of model years. The incumbent is required to have a base working knowledge of the equipment components in order to move or operate the equipment for service and have the ability to correctly diagnose problems not specified in applicable programs.
Who we are looking for -
The incumbent, at a minimum, must be able to diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify the following systems on heavy trucks and equipment:
Engine, transmission, and drivetrain repair and maintenance, repair, and modify the following systems on heavy trucks and equipment.
Steering and suspension repair and maintenance
Hydraulic systems diagnosis and repair
Brake systems, including air brakes.
Direct current (DC) electrical systems for heavy and light duty equipment
Welding, including MIG, arc, and gas welding and brazing.
Tire repair and replacement on all types of equipment
Minor body and frame repair

The working environment you can expect -
This position is at our Valdez - State Equipment Fleet shop located at .5 Mile Richardson Highway. Some travel in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is expected in this position. Travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED AT TIME OF INTERVIEW:
A copy of your Class A CDL (If you have one).

COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIRED
This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) per federal regulations (49 CFR 383), to register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties, and to provide consent to the Employer to review driver information in accordance with 49 CFR 382.
Hire approval is conditional in that the proposed appointee successfully obtains a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of hire and signs an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION & PUBLIC FACILITIES DRUG AND ALCOHOL POLICY
Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and procedures and CANNOT start work in a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) position until Management Services or designee has received confirmation of the proposed appointee passing the required Pre-Employment drug test. According to federal regulations, all violations and refusals will be maintained with the Federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse database.
TOOL ALLOWANCE
Employees in this position are required to provide their own hand tools. Employees in this position will be paid a monthly tool allowance determined by their position. Your manager should review this with you after you are hired.
