Join HII Marine Services Operations (MSO) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. MSO trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Mechanic Assistant candidate will support MSO, working closely with our skilled trades teams on surface ship electrical systems, utilizing various tools of the trade, removing, installing and upgrading industrial equipment. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.

What You Will Do

  • Display levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.

  • Gain valuable trades and life experience as you learn and focus your skills through the direction of senior technical tradespersons in a variety of locales.

  • Perform routine work technical trades duties, under direction, and in accordance with blueprints and technical manuals, to include support of technical repair, installation, maintenance and modification of equipment and related structures and systems at customer and/or field locations.

  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled specific or general duties, such as supplying or holding materials and tools; cleaning working area, machines, equipment and diverse tasks as directed.

  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled laboring duties related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a wide array of systems and equipment.

  • Apply job skills and company policies to complete a wide range of tasks that vary based on job, contract, customer requirements, specifications, etc.

What You Must Have

  • High School education, or Trade School or equivalent, and 1 year of related experience.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOD secret clearance and must be able to obtain and maintain a DBIDS/CAC badge for base access/credentials.

  • Must have experience working in a team environment.

  • Must be able to travel 50%-75% of the time.

  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Bonus Points For ..

  • Prior Shipboard experience.

  • Previous work related to technical trades.

  • Candidates who hold a current or active DoD confidential clearance or higher.

  • Candidate with related technical training, degrees, and/or certifications.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Most work is performed aboard ships or in industrial conditions. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
