Short Description

The purpose of the Heavy Equipment Mechanic A position within Herc Rentals is to utilize his/her mechanical expertise to support the needs of the branch in a professional, safe and timely manner. An individual in this position will work to keep all equipment in top running condition through an effective preventative maintenance program. This incumbent is a master technician and assumes a leadership role of product knowledge and standard of quality within the branch. He/she has mastered the operating standards of his facility, the region and corporation.


  • Follow a consistent and regular schedule to perform various types of maintenance on heavy equipment, construction equipment and various pieces of machinery

  • Perform major repairs on equipment using hand tools, machine tools and measuring instruments

  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot fuel systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and propane systems

  • Conduct oil changes, lubrication of equipment, tire replacements, hose repairs, battery replacements and assorted services

  • Recondition and replace assorted parts of the heavy equipment

  • Operate and test equipment

  • Diagnoses problem areas for any significant wear or tear on the equipment

  • Maintain work area in a clean and organized manner

  • Produce timely and detailed service reports and repair logs

  • Follow all company's filed procedures and protocols

  • Build positive relationships with customers

  • Perform additional duties as assigned

VIEW JOBS 1/7/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-04-07T00:00 * Applies mechanical skills and aptitude to repair, install, troubleshoot, and perform other predictive and preventative maintenance tasks on natural gas compression including reciprocating and centrifugal units, auxiliary equipment such as control systems, electrical generators, air compressors, pumps, valves, pipelines, filters, scrubbers, etc. * Assists personnel and/or performs other tasks as defined by the work crew. * Responds to emergency situations. * Operates assigned equipment in a manner to meet operational needs in compliance with company and regulatory requirements. * Recognizes operating deviations and takes appropriate corrective action. * Maintains cleanliness and general appearance of facilities and surrounding work area as needed. * Reads and interprets drawings and schematics and loading curves and uses other technical resources in the performance of assigned work. * Effectively uses hand and power tools including precision measurement equipment to determine dimensions and set clearances. * Operates portable and mobile work equipment. * Schedules, coordinates, and inspects the work of third party contractors. * Maintains records for required state, federal, and company procedures. Utilizes computers and e-mail for internal and external communication, record keeping, on-line reporting, material and supply ordering, and filing/maintenance of various forms and records. * Actively contributes as a member of work crew, providing and supporting the training of other crew members, performing administrative duties in addition to technical tasks; and other activities such as budgeting, planning, scheduling, problem solving, work order systems, prioritization and decision-making. Performs work independently with minimum supervision. Required Skills: * Possess a strong mechanical background and a minimum of 4 years of good working knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements for reciprocating engines (Waukesha, Caterpillar, and White Superior Engines) natural gas compressor (Ariel, Worthington, Chicago Pneumatic) and turbine / centrifugal natural gas compressors units, program logic controllers and auxiliary gas equipment. * Possess a strong mechanical background and a minimum of two years of good working knowledge of centrifugal, reciprocating, positive displacement, multi stage and diaphragm pumps Special Characteristics/Job Requirements: * A multi skilled knowledge to contribute in all phases of the business would be helpful. * Must live within 30 minutes of the work location. * Subject to hazardous conditions including escaping gas, adverse weather conditions and temperatures, heights, high-pressure gas, heavy lifting, and cramped conditions. * May be required to travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings, and training involving some overnights stays away from home. * Subject to call out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and extended workdays and/or workweeks. * Will be required to carry cell phone at all Times and to participate in a rotating on-call schedule. * Must have a proven safe driving record, valid Louisiana driver's license and subject to U.S. Department of Transportation Drug & Alcohol related regulations. * New hires to the Company will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test and are subject to a background check.
