DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the processing of the resident assessment (MDS/Minimum Data Set) at the Terrace View Long-Term Care Facility of the Erie County Medical Center Corporation.
The incumbent assesses resident's functional status in accordance with New York State and Federal guidelines. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher ranking Registered Nurse. Supervision is not a function of the position. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Assesses resident's functional status;
Ensures timely and accurate submissions of MDS to the New York State database;
Selects the correct Assessment Reference Date (ARD) and correct reasons for assessment that capture all resources to ensure appropriate payment by Medicare/Medicaid systems;
Reviews the New York State validation reports and ensures that appropriate follow-up action is taken;
Communicates with insurance companies to ensure appropriate documentation and coverage is provided;
Participates in the care planning process;
Assists residents and families in understanding insurance coverage;
Participates in educational programs, staff meetings, training programs and Quality Improvement Initiative as assigned;
May perform direct-patient care in a Charge Nurse capacity.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques, principals, terminology and care practices related to long-term care residents; good knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, accreditation standards and ECMCC policies and procedures as they relate to long-term care; good knowledge of MDS, RAI (Resident Assessment Instrument) and Assessment Reference Date (ARD) process, care planning and RUGS (Resource Utilization Groups) optimization; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; sound professional judgment; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
A.) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and one (1) year of Minimum Data Set experience as a registered professional nurse in a long-term care setting or skilled nursing facility; or:
B.) Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and three (3) years of registered professional nursing experience, of which one (1) year included Minimum Data Set experience in a long-term care setting or skilled nursing facility; or:
C.) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
