Job Description:

Position functions as the Innovation design squad engineer specialist responsible for the management of project related testing of improvements to the plan development process and automation efforts as the department moves toward the adoption of Civil Integrated Management (CIM). Projects may include all types of work performed by MDOT and vary from complex to simple road rehabilitation, road replacement, and new road construction. Assist the Design Services statewide specialists by testing and supporting new implementations on projects and coordinating with necessary internal and external teams and stakeholders. This will include performing as back-up for the statewide review of Reference Information Documents (RID) and other digital engineering data as necessary to help improve the processes and maintain industry credibility of this data.

This position will provide quality control, quality assurance, and consistency in carrying out unit design projects. It will also be responsible for working with the respective Region in responding to and resolving complex and unusual design related construction issues, preparing reports, estimates, and special provisions, as well as, attending meetings. This position will work with other specialists within the unit to develop the training material for statewide staff and provide feedback and guidance to others in the unit.

Required Education and Experience


Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.


Four years of professional experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including two years equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 or one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 12 or Transportation Engineer Licensed 12.

Additional Requirements and Information

Possession of a registered professional engineering license as required by the State of Michigan.

This posting is for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) in the Bureau of Transportation Planning. The work assignments will be located in the MDOT offices/sites in Lansing (Ingham and Eaton Counties). Typical Work Assignments In an on-the-job training capacity, work assignments could include performing entry and intermediate level work, including but not limited to: Statewide Planning: * Assist with the Five-Year Transportation Program (5YTP) presentation development for the State Transportation Commission. * Assist with 5YTP public comment summary and responses. * Assist with Call for Project analysis, such as cost per lane mile tables, and with the review of candidate projects. * Assist with funding monitoring reports for trunkline and local templates. * Review federal and state revenues and assist with trend analysis updates. * Assist the legislative policy specialists with review and analysis of state and federal legislation and policies. * Assist the legislative policy specialists in drafting letters to the federal register or legislature. * Assist the nonmotorized program staff in Act 51 compliance and training coordination. * Assist in the development of the State Long-Range Transportation Plan. * Assist in writing letters and briefing papers for internal/external team members and project sponsors on the progress of the plan. * Participate in public/stakeholder engagement efforts by attending public meetings and events and providing support. * Assist in drafting press releases and coordinating with consultants and Office of Communications to approve information to be placed on the website. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): * Learn and perform the daily tasks of a GIS professional. * Learn how GIS and geospatial data supports ongoing MDOT business. * Design ArcGIS online applications. * Dashboards * Real time reporting applications * Story maps * Collector applications Develop GIS services. * Map services * Feature services * Geodatabase services * Data services Learn to design business and technology project workflows. Gain an understanding of Linear Referencing Systems. Assist staff in the maintenance of enterprise geodatabases. * Design event and feature class schemas * Manage business data via Event Editor * Create domains * Validate datasets * Post and reconcile editing versions * Field data collection experience Data Collection & Reporting * Learn about MDOT traffic and pavement data collection activities and reporting requirements. * Learn about the Transportation Data Management System and the various modules used to analyze and report data. * Learn about the systems used to retain and perform QA/QC on traffic and pavement data. * Learn how data is field collected and uploaded into TDMS and PaveMaPP. * Learn to generate data reports to support ongoing MDOT business. * Perform QC work on traffic count data. * Review, upload, and edit data in the traffic count database. * Coordinate traffic count scheduling with local transportation and planning agencies. * Maintain and improve traffic segmentation in GIS environment. 2020 Pay Rates First Year: $15.85/hour Second Year: $17.23/hour Third Year: $17.72/hour Fourth Year: $18.23/hour Fifth Year: $18.59/hour Sixth Year: $19.15/hour Required Education and Experience * Cumulative GPA must be a 2.0 or higher. * First year: Students can apply now but must have earned a minimum of 24 semester credits or 36 term credits before entry into the program in May. * Subsequent years: Returning students must show reasonable accumulation of credits, up to the maximum number of years allowed in the program (six years).
