Job Description

Position Title: Summer Youth Recreation Facilities Operations Assistant

Department: Parks and Recreation

Location: Community Centers and Parks

Number of open positions: 8

Anticipated Start Date: June 3, 2024

End Date: August 9, 2024

Hours of work per week: up to 30 hours

Business/Work Hours: 8:30 am

  • 9:00 pm Mon-Fri, 9:00am

  • 5:00pm Sat

Pay Rate: $12

General Description:

The purpose of this class within the organization is to implement a variety of community, recreational, cultural, special events, and other programs at City of Charleston designated facilities for youth ages 16 - 20 years of age. Program employment dates are June 3, 2024 - August 9, 2024 and may be extended based on employee availability and departmental needs.

Work hours: Maximum 35 hours per week.

This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Responsibilities, tasks, and projects:

Provides various assistance and support at one or more recreational community centers including, but not limited to greeting patrons, answering telephones, enforcing community center rules, and facility maintenance.

Assist with creating and supervising community center programs and activities.

Assist with cleaning and sanitizing high usage areas within the recreational community

centers. Such duties could include, but not limited to sweeping floors, mopping floors, picking up trash along the grounds, wiping glass doors and mirrors, wiping down cardio and weight equipment, taking out trash, cleaning bathroom stalls, etc....

Registers golfers, collects green fees and provides other support at Cato Park golf shop.

Takes food and drink orders and collects payments at one or more swimming pool concession stands.

Assist with tracking the progress of youth participants throughout the summer, ensuring any issues are reported to the Center Staff and are addressed.

Assist with providing mentorship, guidance, and support to youth at the centers to help them develop positivity, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Assist Center Staff with engaging with parents and caregivers to promote summer programming activities.

Assist with providing academic support and enrichment activities to help prevent summer learning loss.

Assist Center Staff with completing daily deposit paperwork.

Work collaboratively with other city department staff and outside organizations during the events and activities planning process.

And all other duties as assigned.

Candidate requirements:

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to walk and sit up to 8 hours per day.

Must have reliable transportation.

Must be 16 years of age or older.

Dress Code:

Parks and Recreation provided t-shirt, long sleeved shirt, or sweatshirt.

Comfortable tops and bottoms without holes or excessive wear

Comfortable shoes to assist with programs and activities.

No shirts showing the mid-drift or chest area.

All bottoms should be mid-thigh or longer.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Must have the ability to provide documentation verifying legal work status.

  • Ability to read and speak the English language proficiently in order to communicate and interact with others; to understand and interpret safety instructions; and to respond to internal and external inquiries.

  • Ability to understand and comply with City and departmental guidelines, policies, procedures and expectations.
