Mathematics Tutor (10-month position)

Description

Provide tutoring for all levels of college mathematics courses in face to face, group and online environments as well as to provide supplemental instruction to first year introductory math courses.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive mathematic tutoring to students in face to face and online environments in all subject areas.

  • Conduct one-on-one and group tutoring by appointment as well as walk-ins.

  • Review mathematic principles, demonstrate solving math problems and review for test.

  • Provides counsel on math and test anxiety.

  • Assess student work according to best practices, provide useful feedback, and document visits.

  • Communicate with Student Success Center staff and faculty regarding the progress of students.

  • Assist in training and supervising student peer tutors.

  • Ensure students have correctly signed in and out of their tutoring sessions.

  • Work collaboratively with the Learning Commons staff and Peer Tutors.

  • Plan and facilitate interactive workshops on mathematic skills as well as related college skills.

  • Design instructional materials for math subject areas based on student needs.

  • Use a variety of tutoring strategies to assess student understanding, improve student learning, and create opportunities for student success. Model and promote effective study skills for students.

  • Co-direct the Assisi Opportunity Program.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong mathematic and problem-solving abilities especially in algebra, statics, and calculus.

  • Experience working with students from different cultural backgrounds, with students of all levels of ability.

  • Experience working with students with academically at-risk students.

  • Knowledge of basic and advanced college math skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics or closely related field with demonstrable expertise in math. Master's degree in mathematics or education preferred.

  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience at the high school or college level.

  • Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.

  • Flexible schedule: Hours may vary semester to semester or be adjusted mid-semester.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft, Blackboard, Internet, and searching library databases.

  • Experience working with academically underprepared or at-risk students in an educational setting.

  • Ability to work independently and to take initiative in fulfilling responsibilities.

Compensation: $35,000 - $40,000
