Position Summary
Thousands of children need extra help to achieve grade level skills and confidence in math. Take action as a tutor because students who have strong foundational math skills are better prepared for success in the classroom, community and workplace.
As a Math Tutor, you'll be placed at a local school where you'll help students in kindergarten through third grade to improve their core math skills and gain confidence. Every day, you'll meet with groups of 2-3 students to provide extra practice and build skills.
With great training and on-site coaching, we'll prepare you to help kids succeed. Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the entire school year. We are currently recruiting tutors for the 2023-24 school year, with the option of beginning in August, October or January.?
This is an AmeriCorps member position with Math Corps and you'll be joining a team of 300 tutors nationwide. Together we're on a mission to multiply a student's future opportunities through math!
What to Expect
Use proven strategies to help students build their skills and confidence.
Collaborate with coaches to monitor student progress and see what's working.
Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.
Commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.
Represent Math Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.
Perks Package
Serve as a tutor and receive a scalable perks package based on your time commitment of 35, 25,18 or 10 hours per week.
35 hours/week perks:
A stipend of $1,000 paid every 2 weeks
$21,000 total for 1200 hours of service starting in August 2023
$17,000 total for 900 hours of service starting in October 2023
$11,000 total for 675 hours of service starting in January 2024
Up to $4,826 for tuition or student loans*
$4,826 total for members beginning their service in August 2023
$3,447 total for members beginning their service in October 2023
$2,626 total for members beginning their service in January 2024
Federal student loan forbearance and interest repayment
Individual health insurance
25 hours/week perks:
A stipend of $750 paid every 2 weeks
$15,750 total for 900 hours of service starting in August 2023
$12,750 total for 675 hours of service starting in October 2023
$8,250 total for 450 hours of service starting in January 2024
Up to $3,447 for tuition or student loans*
$3,447 total for members beginning their service in August 2023

A stipend of $535 paid every 2 weeks

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ at the start of their service term may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child, or stepchild.
What it Takes
Math Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to take action for kids - and meet the following minimum qualifications.
By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:
Dependable and have a history of good attendance
Able to understand and follow instructions
Open to making improvements based on feedback
Capable of setting a pace and maintain a schedule with students
Competent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)
Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing
18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
Able to successfully complete a background check
Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.

Math Corps is powered by AmeriCorps members who serve as tutors. Started in 2008, Math Corps has helped more than 20,000 kids in grades 4-8 build foundational skills and get on track with math. Independent evaluation shows Math Corps students are twice as likely to achieve year-end benchmarks than their peers without Math Corps. The program is replicated nationally and is currently offered in Minnesota, California, Georgia, Mississippi and Michigan.
