POSITION PURPOSE

The Maternal Transport Team provides highly skilled Maternal critical care for various conditions unique to the maternal population. The focus of the Maternal Transport Team nurses is to deliver safe, evidence-based care to pregnant mothers during ambulance and helicopter transport.

The Maternal Transport nurse will provide advanced critical care nursing knowledge and skills to acutely ill patients in the transport environment. During transport events, the RN is responsible for resuscitation and stabilizing critically ill maternal patients and transporting them to a higher level of care at MercyOne Des Moines. While in-house, the transport nurses are expert clinical resources available to assist with select patient care activities and to help establish and maintain a high-quality standard of care for all maternal patients. Primary responsibility is patient transport and immediate relief from other patient care activities is a requirement of the role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Perform initial and ongoing assessments of maternal patients with complex healthcare needs in the hospital setting.

Obtain pertinent maternal and neonatal histories emphasizing risk factors and implications for health concerns. Promotes patient and family-centered care. Implement interventions and treatments consistent with direct orders from the Medical Control Provider, documenting response to care and treatments.

Collaborates with the patient, family, and healthcare team to create a multidisciplinary team to provide continuous and well-coordinated care. Quickly, efficiently, and calmly responds to emergency and critical situations. Ensures patient and crew safety during transport.

Documents a comprehensive patient record that reflects all aspects of nursing care provided. Actively evaluates and ensures safety in and around aircraft and ambulances. Directs any safety concerns to the Program Manager, the Air Methods Base Manager, and / or the Air Method's Safety Officer.

Actively participates in evaluating and ensuring ambulance safety practices. Directs any safety concerns to the Program Manager. Makes recommendations for safe practices.

Completes follow-up on transported patients, providing verbal or written progress reports to the referring facility/physician. Professional accountability to maintain performance improvement activities, skills, and certification Maintenance activities and team projects. When not transporting and once all responsibilities associated with the program's daily operations have been completed, assists with patient care in the maternity units and responds to medical emergencies within MercyOne Children's Hospital.

Other duties assigned by the manager/director. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations. Trinity Health's Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct as well as other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.

Minimum of 3 years of experience as a registered nurse in a Level III Labor & Delivery Unit

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider Certification Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Advanced Provider Certification.

Iowa Department of Health and Human Services Mandatory Reporter Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.

AWHONN Critical Care Nursing Course within 1 year of employment as a Maternal Transport Nurse.
