Summary
In this role you will generate creative testing strategies for materials and processes. You will be instrumental in the selection and qualification of materials and process for space hardware. You will also design and conduct experiments for the development of innovative space-based manufacturing technologies.
Responsibilities
Design experiments for the development of novel materials and optimization of novel processes.
Research, test, and analyze different materials and processes for use in a variety of space environments.
Review engineering drawings/routers prior to procurement/fabrication/assembly of flight hardware
Develop and maintain prohibited/approved materials and processes documentation
Actively participate in anomaly root cause investigations and make recommendations on corrective actions
Actively participate in technical reviews, including engineering design reviews, failure review boards, safety reviews, test readiness reviews, etc.
Contribute to trade studies for the selection of materials and processes for space applications
Prevent failure in complex systems by highlighting issues/concerns and providing recommended actions/mitigations to address the risk
Perform mechanical property testing per ASTM standards to ensure materials and processes are adequate to meet program needs
Create custom test fixtures to support unique testing configurations
Develop testing strategies and thoroughly document test results for the purpose of verifying program requirements are met and lessons learned are captured
Support the development and maintenance of program plans
Guide and review the development of system requirement, system architectures and design.
Research and select appropriate components for system development based on system performance requirements
Support the identification, documentation, and mitigation of program risks
Support internal and external proposal efforts
Maintain good communication with immediate supervisor, project leaders, and other professionals in the section or group
Ideal Experience:
PhD in a related discipline (materials engineering, materials science, process engineering, etc) with 0 years of experience, or Masters in a related discipline with + 2 years relevant industry experience, or Bachelor's degree in a related discipline with + 4 years relevant industry experience.
Experience working with advanced materials for space applications.
Firsthand design, manufacturing and assembly experience
Experience with optimization of novel manufacturing processes
Experienced in selection and testing of materials for space-based applications
Skilled in identifying noncompliant materials/processes within complex systems
Superb leadership skills with the ability to interface with multiple teams to direct processes and guide to use/amend proper processes to be followed
Excellent verbal, written, organization and presentation skills
Ability to travel - up to 10%
US citizen or US Person as defined by ITAR regulations
Desired Skills:
Advanced degree in related discipline
Intimately familiar with the hazards of the space environment and experienced with the selection of materials and process for robust space hardware.
Hardware and labor budget management experience
Experience using Granta Selector software
Experience with qualification of parts, materials and processes for space applications
Basic proficiency in CAD programs (Inventor, Solidworks, ProE, etc)
Basic familiarity with numerical methods and simulation (MATLAB or Python, Ansys, etc)
Experience with reviewing engineering drawings/routers prior to procurement/fabrication/assembly of flight hardware for technical feasibility and safety per specifications (e.g., ASTM E1997, NASA-STD-6012, NASA-STD-6016A, SSP 57000, SSP 51700, NASA-STD 6001B, etc.)
Familiarity with NASA safety review process
Lunar infrastructure research experience
