Materials Research Engineer

General Summary

This position is responsible for applying scientific concepts, theories, and research practices in creative and innovative ways. Materials Engineer will prepare, present, and follow up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration; and working under general supervision where work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and consistency with organizational goals and strategies.

  • Generates research in and technical areas, producing yearly revenues of a set value or providing support for a set number of staff.

  • Managing research projects of moderate size from initiation through machining, testing, analysis and reporting.

  • Prepare, present, and follow-up on research proposals of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration.

  • Responsible for leading and managing projects or project of limited to moderate size, scope, or duration.

  • Develop or direct the development of research findings, draw conclusions, and make recommendations.

  • Recommend changes in procedures and devise new approaches to deal with problems encountered.

Position Specific

  • Review progress and evaluate results on research projects.

  • Prepare and present reports to clients and the professional community.

  • Meet research goals within time and cost constraints.

  • Lead marketing and project development activities in defined market areas.

  • Interact with research scientists and associates in multiple areas of the organization.

  • Participate in the technical evaluation of assigned staff and in the identification of their development needs.

  • Performs other duties as required by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

  • US Citizenship required.

  • Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET

  • MS degree in relevant discipline

  • Relevant background in high temperature materials, lab testing or related materials discipline

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. in Materials Engineering or Ceramics Engineering

  • 1-5 years of experience in materials research

  • Background in heat transfer, vacuum, composites, and/or ceramics

  • Active Security clearance

While your job duties may fluctuate day to day, here are some areas we expect to see you grow in: For first time interns: * Observing and documenting field activities related to the construction process * Sampling, testing, and inspecting soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt, and structural steel placement * Performing calculations and data reduction of test results along with drafting * Using field screening equipment and documenting readings * Reading maps, following directions, and interpreting engineering and construction plans * Interacting and communicating daily with contractors, technicians, and project manager For seasoned interns- you will have an opportunity to do some more advanced field work but also see how we solve problems and deliver results to our clients by: * Testing of soils, foundations, reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, masonry, structural steel, and asphalt pavement * Determining and/or performing appropriate laboratory tests * Attending project meetings and assisting in project resolutions * Assisting with preparation of proposals * Assisting with scheduling, training, and oversight of Field Technicians * Assist with managing project budgets and invoicing What We're Looking For * Actively pursuing a BS or MS in civil engineering, construction management, or related field * Interest in how building materials are utilized in the construction process or a career path in geotechnical engineering * Access to an insured vehicle to use as tranportation to construction sites (mileage reimbursed) * Clean driving record * Some serious GRIT and have no problem lifting/carrying 40 – 100 lbs. multiple times a day Please note - assistance with relocation is not provided for this position.
