Are you passionate about Technology Breakthrough and Innovation? S&C Electric Company is seeking a dynamic individual to join our TBI department. As a Materials Project Engineer, you'll be crucial in ensuring smooth operations and supporting our diverse team.

The Materials Project Engineer at S&C plays a critical role in supporting the development and commercialization of new medium voltage distribution switchgear products for the utility market. This role focuses on the formulation, design, prototyping, and evaluation of mechanical and electrically insulating structures and components. The Materials Project Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that new product concepts are effectively developed and brought to market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • New Product Development Support: Collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop new engineering materials, contributing to the successful commercialization of medium voltage electrical products. Formulates and designs materials and components, including prototypes, for new product concepts. This includes working on mechanical designs and electrically insulating structures that meet product requirements.

  • Materials and Process Technology Expertise: Applies advanced knowledge of materials and process technologies to support product development. This includes expertise in formulation, molding, extrusion, specification, and qualification of materials. Develops and qualifies new materials and processes that are critical for the commercialization of new products, ensuring they meet all necessary industry standards and regulations.

  • Project Support: Manages multiple tasks and supports multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality results. Works independently and as a key member of cross-functional teams, contributing to product development from concept to commercialization. Identifies potential risks in the development process and develops mitigation strategies in collaboration with other team members.

  • Material Testing: Utilizes a range of specialized testing equipment, such as tensile testers, rheometers, and thermal analyzers, to evaluate material properties and ensure compliance with design specifications.

  • Continuous Improvement: Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the latest advancements in materials science and engineering. Proactively integrates emerging materials and technologies into the design process to enhance product performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Makes an effort to enhance the team's capabilities, including training/coaching other Engineers on material science-related practices.

  • Product Development Documentation: Support the development and revision of documents and technical requirements. Participates in the evaluation and qualification of materials, suppliers, equipment, technology, and processes to ensure that conformance and producibility requirements are met.

  • Compliance: Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules

What you'll Need To Succeed:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.

  • 5+ years of experience in materials engineering, particularly in new product development and commercialization (open to candidates with stronger tenure as well, the level of job title can be flexible)

  • Proven track record of developing and bringing new products to market, ensuring they meet quality, budget, and timeline requirements.

  • Advanced understanding of materials science, particularly in the areas of formulation, molding, extrusion, specification, and qualification.

  • Able to apply innovative problem-solving techniques to overcome challenges related to material properties, such as finding ways to enhance the strength, durability, or thermal stability of components while maintaining manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.

  • Demonstrated experience with DFMA, DFMEA, and other engineering analysis tools.

  • Great communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in both oral and written forms, including technical reports, design documentation, and presentations.

  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency, ensuring commitment to deadlines and an ability to push difficult projects towards completion.

  • Sound business sense and analytical skills with the ability to use and analyze data to drive informed actions, solve complex problems, and drive learning.

  • Rounded interpersonal skills to establish meaningful relationships built on mutual trust and respect, navigate and resolve conflict, moderate behaviors, and foster collaborative working relationships amongst a diverse audience.

  • Proficient in the use of 3D CAD software (e.g., Solid Edge, SolidWorks) to develop and communicate designs.

Preferred

  • Master's degree or PHD in one of the above fields.

  • Additional coursework or experience in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering.

  • Mechanical engineering skills that support product design and development.

  • Experience in the electrical utility market or related industries.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes relevant to medium voltage distribution switchgear.

Environmental and Hazardous Conditions

  • Continuously working indoors/outdoors in an air-conditioned office/manufacturing based environment.

  • Infrequently exposed to fumes/vapors/dust/gases/odors/mist/toxic chemicals/radiation/vibration/grease/oils/radiation/lasers/other etc.

  • Occasionally exposed to low/moderate/high noise levels including machinery/vehicles/forklifts/office equipment/office traffic etc.

  • Occasionally working around energized equipment with the risk of electrocution/scalding/burns/other etc.

  • Infrequently exposed to wet humid/outdoor weather/extreme cold (non-weather)/extreme heat (non-weather) conditions/other etc.

  • Infrequently working with machinery with moving parts/vehicles/forklifts/heavy machinery/sharp objects/other etc.

Physical Requirements:

Sitting Frequently required to remain in a stationary position and perform desk-based tasks for hours at a time. Walking Frequently required to walk moderate distances across the S&C campus. Manual Dexterity Occasionally required to use hand-eye coordination to control both hands and arms for a full range of motion to operate equipment/machinery/power tools/office productivity equipment. Ascending / Descending Occasionally ascending or descending ladders/stairs/scaffolding/ramps/poles. Observation / Eyesight Frequently required to observe details at close range including depth perception, peripheral vision, and the ability to differentiate between colors Communication Continuously required to talk and hear, in person and by phone/conference calls Travel Occasionally required to travel and work extended hours when necessary. Required to travel overnight. Required to travel internationally.
