BASE SALARY FOR:

Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub-Journey 1 - $17.84/Hour

Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub-Journey 2 - $20.04/Hour

Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub-Journey 3 - $21.10/Hour

Materials Laboratory Technician, Sub-Journey 4 - $23.62/Hour

Materials Laboratory Technician, Journey - $25.16/Hour

What you will be doing:

The Materials Laboratory Technician 1/2/3/4/Journey (MLT) will be part of a team in the DOT&PF Central Region Materials Section Lab that works cooperatively to perform materials testing in support of Highway and Aviation design and construction projects. The incumbent will be overseen by senior technicians as they perform designated tests in the areas of soils/aggregates, concrete/cement, bituminous mix/asphalt materials, and/or special products.

The Central Region Materials Section consists of a 20-plus member team of Geotechnical Engineers, Engineering Assistants, Engineering Geologists, and Lab staff who work cooperatively to support Highway and Aviation Design & Construction projects. The incumbent will be an integral part of this team by performing materials testing in support of these projects.

This position offers full time seasonal work, with the potential for year round employment, and paid overtime.

The working environment you can expect:

The Central Region Materials Lab is located at 5750 East Tudor Road in Anchorage, which is a satellite office to the regional branch located at 4111 Aviation Avenue. Daily work is centric to performing various materials testing utilizing standard testing equipment, completing lab forms, using computer testing software, and inspection, maintenance, and calibration of testing equipment.

Special Note:

  • All MLT's need to achieve and maintain Western Alliance for Quality Transportation Construction (WAQTC) and National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) credentials. A MLT at the entry level is required to achieve this after being hired during the probationary period.

    The NICET levels increase progressively from level one in concrete, soils, and asphalt up to level two at the Journey level. Continuing education units are required to retain NICET certification at all levels, so continual training is required.

  • Requires proficiency in basic mathematics, reading comprehension, and computer skills.

  • Possesses ability to handle continuous physical labor with loads of up to 60 kg (130 lbs).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Materials Laboratory Technician 1,2,3,4, or journey level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience.

The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
