The Materials Engineer is a part of Mattel's Global Materials Lab team, tasked with identifying, evaluating, and developing new technologies. Duties include finding new materials technologies, improving existing material technologies, guiding selection of materials, and collaborating with Design, Development, and Manufacturing to identify opportunities for new and existing material technologies. The Materials Engineer should be familiar with many types of materials and material processing techniques. Must have a passion for the creative process.

Responsibilities:

  • Confer with Design, Development, and manufacturing as well as other Materials Lab staff, to identify materials that improve existing products, or enable innovative new products

  • Recommend materials for reliable performance in various environments

  • Communicate with raw material suppliers to gather data, request samples, and assess suitability of their material

  • Research methods of processing and forming materials

  • Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials

  • Present new materials, as well as concepts derived from those materials/technologies to D&D and/or manufacturing

  • Ensure milestone dates for the development of chemical or material technologies are aligned with project milestone dates

  • Troubleshoot technical challenges throughout the life cycle of the material (ideation, development, production)

  • Facilitate and participate in brainstorm activities

  • Occasional travel, domestic and international

Experience, Education & Skills

  • B.S. in Materials Engineering or related

  • 2 years work experience as a Materials Engineer or advanced degree

  • Experience with material processing (injection molding, blow molding, etc), preferably in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience evaluating sustainable materials a plus

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions

  • Strong understanding of principles of Materials Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • Ability to think creatively

  • Strong knowledge of problem-solving techniques

  • Ability to tailor communication to different types of audiences, both technical and non-technical

  • Must work well in a team-oriented environment
