Our Gulf Coast branch provides services for our customers located in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas. Within the Gulf Coast branch, Veolia operates a hazardous waste incinerator in Port Arthur, TX, a service center in Baytown, TX and a service center in College Park, GA. The Gulf Coast branch offers the following services: Lab Chemical Services, On-Site Services, Transportation, Household Hazardous Waste, Reactive Chemicals, Remediation, Training Services, Specialty Services, Drum Management, Incineration, Fuels Blending, Recycling and Radioactive Waste Management.

While Material Handlers I are an entry level role, they can move on to an Material Handlers II, III, and then Environmental Specialist.

Job Summary:

Responsible for performing a variety of routine hazardous and non-hazardous waste tasks in the movement and processing of various waste in various container size/type. Tasks could include: Follow procedures & direction, perform manual labor, proper usage of PPE, operate mobile equipment (manual and powered), operate fixed / stationary equipment, loading & unloading containers, perform equipment inspections, identification of various container size/type, scanning container movements, consolidation of containers & material, staging containers in designated area, recognize markings & labels. Tasks will be performed on a daily basis in the designated processing area as assigned by Leads & Supervisors in order to meet processing objectives for material disposal.

Essential responsibilities and duties include:

  • Work as directed by supervisors, leads, trainers or mentors

  • Recognize various container size & type

  • Recognize labels & markings

  • Understand and follow procedures & processes

  • Load and unload various size containers (totes, drums, tankers, trailers. etc.) using mechanical or manual means

  • Use a variety of tools such as impact wrenches, shovels, jackhammers, etc.

  • Transport hazardous materials from storage locations within the facility as directed

  • Decontaminate and dispose of empty drums and/or containers according to RCRA and disposal guidelines

  • Assist in completing all necessary paperwork for processing materials to include transportation of materials to and from various locations

  • Perform general housekeeping duties

  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area

  • Inspect material handling equipment as required

  • Assist in the loading/unloading of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials at designated sites utilizing appropriate equipment for which you are appropriately trained.

Non-Essential Duties and

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent

  • 3 to 6 months general labor experience

  • Forklift experience preferred

Certification/Licenses:

  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER training preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Ability to communicate through reading and writing

  • Trained in the use of material handling equipment

The role of a Foreman is to assist the General Foreman in providing leadership, direction and supervision of craft workers; to provide coordination in order that crafts work in a safe and productive manner. They evaluate, monitor and report on work progression, whilst ensuring that all works are conducted in compliance and in line with man-hour budget. This person is to have a full working knowledge of their craft sector, to be aware of industry/legislative changes, safety protocols, relevant certifications (for personnel or equipment). Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities: * Stores, removes, loads and unloads all types of materials from storage bins, pallets, trays, racks, and vehicles that can't be handled by material handling devices. * Opens containers, using steel cutters, crowbar, claw hammer, or other hand tools. * Operates manual or mechanical devices and stocks inventory shelves. * Secures lifting attachments to materials and conveys load to destination, using hand-operated crane or hoist, or signals crane or hoisting operators to move load to destination * Reads production schedule, customer order, work order, shipping order or follows oral instructions to determine items to be moved, gathered or distributed. * Assorts and places materials or items on racks, shelves or bins according to predetermined sequences such as size type, style, or color * Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet. * Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers. * Moves materials and supplies from warehouse and prepares for delivery. * Fills requisition, work orders or request for materials, tools or stock items. * Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together, using banding machine and clincher. * Clamps sections of portable conveyor together or places conveyor sections on blocks or boxes to facilitate movement of materials or products. * Lifts objects by hand or using power hoist, and cleans work area, machines, and equipment, using broom, rags, and cleaning compounds, to assist machine operators. * Makes simple adjustments or repairs, such as realigning belts or replacing rollers, using hand tools. * Assembles crates to contain products, such as machines or vehicles, using hand tools and precut lumber. * Shovels loose materials, such as sand, gravel, metals, plastics, or chemicals, into machine hoppers or into vehicles and containers, such as wheelbarrows, scrap truck, or barrels. * Records material items received or distributed. * May maintain inventory records * Perform routine housekeeping task to maintain work area * Follows all hazardous waste handling guidelines. * Responsible for observing and following all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment. * Performs other duties and activities as directed. * Plan and coordinate labor requirements. * Evaluating performance against schedule. * Closing out Punch list items as allocated. * Advising General Foreman of any issues, impacts, risks or potential costs (financial or time). * Maintaining and updating short range look ahead. * Maintain and monitor company and project specific HSE plans, ensuring awareness and compliance is asserted. * Monitors and reports on cost and man-hour budgets.
