Under the direction of the Director of Competitive & Developmental Swimming, the Head Swim Coach will assist with all aspects of planning and preparation for the Tampa YMCA Swim Team program at their assigned sites. The Head Swim Coach will be responsible for the development and recruitment of swimmers participating with the Tampa YMCA Swim Team programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Development, planning and implementation of workouts and trainings for all assigned sites.

  • Supervise or lead practices and/or dry land trainings, provide guidance to Swim Coaches and Assistant Swim Coaches.

  • Evaluate swimmer ability/performance and plan strategies for their improvement.

  • Coordinate and execute meet registrations.

  • Attend specified competitions, training and/or special events as directed by Director of Competitive & Developmental Swimming

  • Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies for athletes in the programs for all assigned sites.

  • Follow all safety recommendations and guidelines per Tampa YMCA policies and USA Swimming.

  • Communicate program information effectively and in a timely manner to supervisors, participants and their families.

  • Establishes and maintains a team attitude, and encourages good sportsmanship for athletes and parents.

  • Attend all required staff meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/ Experience Required:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred and/or combination of experience and training.

  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience coaching competitive swimming and 1+ year of supervision experience.

  • Knowledge of USA Swimming regulations and safety requirements.

Certifications/Trainings Required:

  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain current certifications in BLS CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration.

  • YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor within 60 days for non USA Swimming programs.

  • ASCA Level 1 coaching certification within 60 days for Competitive Team.

  • United States Swimming Coaching certification for Competitive Team.

  • 180 Days to secure coaching certifications for Developmental Team.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The employee frequently is required to remain alert, with no lapses in consciousness.

  • The employee frequently is required to see, observe, and hear all participants, and make sound judgments and decisions.

  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances (in normal and loud situations), and communicate swiftly and effectively with lifeguards, staff, emergency personnel and members.

  • Ability to observe all areas of the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, and hear noises and recognize victims in distress.

  • Remain in or around designated aquatic areas at all times.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to to move to various locations, sit and/or stand for extended periods, including in and around elevated chair.

  • Ability to direct and control the activities of others, to work under specific instructions, work alone and under stressful conditions.

  • Ability to crouch and bend at the waist and knees.

  • Ability to physically and mentally perform all needed rescues, removals (in and out of the water) and survival skills, including administering CPR/AED, First Aid and Oxygen effectively.

  • Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

  • Ability to lift and move a minimum of 50 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness, heat and cold.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • This position may require availability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
