The mission of the Student Wellness Center, Counseling Center (CC) is to provide comprehensive, high-quality, compassionate, and accessible mental health services to students at the University of Portland. The CC incorporates multicultural humility into all services and affirms the dignity of all students who access care.

This Master's Level Mental Health Provider offers counseling and evaluation services, crisis management, and wellness education to University of Portland students. This position coordinates care with other CC mental health care providers to promote the mental health and wellbeing of students. This position also helps develop and implement mental health education, outreach, and prevention programming.

This full-time position works a 9 month assignment period from mid-August thru mid-Ma y in alignment with the academic year, with benefits eligibility for all 12 months of the year.

Core Duties

  • Provide a wide range of direct clinical services to students; including individual, group, urgent response services, mental health evaluation, and outreach.

  • Provide comprehensive and culturally-appropriate mental health services and programs to a diverse student population.

  • Conduct phone triage and schedule students for intake, on going mental health services, or referral to outside providers, including after-hours care services. Follow up on referral processes to ensure that students are receiving necessary health care services.

  • Provide intake evaluations and counseling.

  • Provide crisis assessment, intervention, and management to students of concern or in crisis; assess need for higher-level care.

  • Evaluate and respond to emergency situations; provide consultation to campus for urgent/crisis situations.

  • Provide hands on case management for students needing assistance with navigating off campus referrals.

  • Track students of concern or requiring higher levels of care, participate in discharge planning, and manage referrals.

  • Work with other CC staff, faculty, administrators, and University staff in consultation, outreach, and other collaborative initiatives.

  • Develop and provide group mental health counseling services through different group modalities such as process, psychoeducational, and population specific groups to University students.

  • Develop campus outreach through participation in educational programming and additional program development.

  • Engage in campus collaboration by serving on campus committees that oversee student care, wellbeing, and mental health.

  • Engage in CC meetings and development activities; complete special projects as assigned, including policy and procedure development.

  • Conduct seminar/rotation training.

  • Provide supervision to meet educational requirements of trainee institutions.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Master's Degree in social work, marriage and family therapy, counseling, or other relevant field of study.

  • Preferred: 2+ years' post licensure experience providing direct mental health services.

  • Preferred: Experience providing clinical services in a collegiate mental health setting.

  • Preferred: Experience providing suicide risk assessment, intervention, and prevention services.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Required: Licensed or license eligible to practice as an LPC, LCSW, or LMFT in Oregon.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Able to provide comprehensive mental health evaluations; has broad knowledge of empirically-based interventions; has consultation experience; has experience working with adolescents and adults.

  • Working understanding of DSM-V nosology; able to recognize areas of competency and limitations; able to work form and work within an interdisciplinary model.

  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, guidelines, and best practices relevant to a university counseling center.

  • Knowledge of and ability to learn referral sources within and outside the University.

  • Knowledge of and ability to protect and maintain the client's right to privacy and confidentiality, including ability to comply with all legal regulations and professional standards in this area.

  • Knowledge of and ability to navigate the differences between FERPA and HIPAA and how they impact provision of counseling services at an institution of higher education.

  • Able to implement appropriate interventions to support health, wellness, and student success, and able to continually monitor outcomes of interventions.

  • Excellent judgment.
