Job Summary
Inspects, maintains, repairs and overhauls automobiles, light/heavy trucks, off-road equipment both gasoline and diesel. Position performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment and all other related work as required. Performs extensive repairs on police and fire emergency equipment.
Essential Functions
1.Performs scheduled preventative maintenance inspections and state vehicle inspections on all vehicles and equipment.
2.Performs accurate diagnoses of engine and electrical defects. Performs trouble shooting and repairs of air conditioning, brake systems air/hydraulic, power trains, and suspension.
3.Performs major and minor engine repairs and overhaul gasoline and diesel engines.
4.Performs trouble shooting and repairs on 12v and 24v automotive electrical systems.
5.Performs accurate troubleshooting and repairs of hydraulic systems.
6.Performs body, frame repairs, cutting of metals and welding.
7.Performs tire repairs up to 20" and/or replacement.
8.Installs radios, light bars, safety devices, tool boxes and other implements and equipment.
9.Operates hand and power tools of the trade as well as advance diagnostic data readers.
Assists other mechanics as needed or directed.
Performs road tests on vehicles and equipment.
Responds to road calls and performs field repairs as needed.
Performs related duties as directed when such duties are a logical and appropriate assignment to the position.
Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
Required Skills
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Must be available to be on call for 24 hours a day for a 7 day period on a fleet mechanic rotation.
Must be self-motivated.
Knowledge of trouble shooting and repairs of police and fire emergency vehicles and equipment.
Must have extensive knowledge of repairs, trouble shooting of automotive and construction equipment.
Must have extensive knowledge of hydraulic system, electrical systems, air systems and drive trains.
Knowledge in installation of electronics and emergency Police/Fire equipment.
Knowledge of parts requisition and ALLDATA referencing.
Must be familiar with the use of automotive and diesel test equipment, gauges, hand tools, power tools, instruments, etc.
Skill in communicating orally and in writing. Familiar with computers and other office equipment and fleet programs.
Provide tools and boxes required of a Master Mechanic Profession.
Must have the ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
Must have the ability to complete tasks as assigned.
Ability to work in a team environment, contribute as a team member and treat co-workers and customers with respect.
Ability to work any day of the week (weekends and weekdays) and long hours.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Requires a minimum of five years of recent experience in the repair and service of automobiles and trucks.
Must have Auto/Light Truck Master ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification, which requires successful completion of 8 exams (A1 thru A8) or must have Medium/Heavy Duty Truck Master ASE certification, which requires successful completion of 6 exams (T2 thru T7).
If the Master ASE certification has not been obtained, one of the following requirements may substitute for the ASE requirement with a scheduled ASE training plan and achievement date within 24 months:
Completion of a Diesel or Gasoline Technical program from an accredited school
Expired Master ASE certification
Military equivalent training to the pay grade of E-5 or above in a mechanical career field
Certifications must be maintained during term of employment.
Must have used the past two generations of DDR (Diagnostic Data Reader) or current scan and data reader.
Must have air brake training and obtain certification within twelve months of hire or promotion.
Must have MACS (Mobile Air Condition Society) or ASE A/C certification or obtain within twelve months of hire or promotion.
Must possess or obtain within 24 months one or more of the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications (EVT) F1 thru F8 or E0 thru E4. Certification(s) must be maintained during term of employment.
Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check.
Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
Ability to obtain a Class A or B CDL Texas driver's license within twelve months of hire or promotion or as directed by management.
Must have the ability to obtain a "Official State of Texas Vehicle Inspector" license within twelve months of hire or promotion or as directed by management.
Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen, functional assessment screening (Level 2), Titmus vision screening, Ishihara vision screening and an audio screening.
Must be able to work shift work, overtime and be subject to on-call as required.
