Master Fleet Technician positions diagnose malfunctions in motorcycle, automotive, light/heavy truck, construction, fire, safety and industrial equipment; determine probable causes and locations of mechanical difficulties; enter work order data into an automated fleet management system; test completed work; perform mechanical repair work; may assist subordinates with the more complex repair work; keep records of work performed; may perform minor welding; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by AFSME Local 127 are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
    4% effective 7/1/24 

2% effective 1/1/25 

5% effective 7/1/25  

  • In addition to the scheduled general wage increases, the following special salary wage increase is also scheduled to take effect for Master Fleet Technician: 
    5% effective 1/1/25

 5% effective 1/1/26

  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

  • Master Fleet Technician employees may be required to lift and carry items weighing over 75 pounds.

  • Master Fleet Technician employees may be required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Master Fleet Technician employees may be required to work night, rotating or unusual shift work for an extended period of time for which they may receive 5% additional pay.

  • Master Fleet Technician employees who possess Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications may receive additional pay.

  • Master Fleet Technician employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing. Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE:  You must meet ONE of the following options:                                          

1.One year of full-time experience as a Fleet Technician with the City of San Diego.      

2.Successful completion of a state-accredited four-year Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship Program AND one year of full-time journey-level experience as an equipment mechanic. Qualifying experience MUST include the maintenance, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of the following equipment:

  • Gas or diesel engines.

  • Hydraulic, air or electric brake systems.

  • Electrical systems.

  • Ignition systems.

  • Electronic controls.

  • Manual or automatic transmission systems.

  • Fuel systems.                   

3.Five years of full-time journey-level experience as an equipment mechanic. Qualifying experience MUST include the maintenance, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of the following equipment:

  • Gas or diesel engines.

  • Hydraulic, air or electric brake systems.

  • Electrical systems.

  • Ignition systems.

  • Electronic controls.

  • Manual or automatic transmission systems.

  • Fuel systems.                                                                                                       

4.An equivalent combination of experience and apprenticeship training as specified above equaling five years.

NOTE:

  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

CERTIFICATION:  A valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Automotive Technician Certificate or Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician Certificate issued from the National Institute of Automotive Excellence will be required at the time of hire.

NOTE:

  • Some positions may require a valid Smog Check Technician Certification from the State of California, Bureau of Automotive Repair within one year from date of hire.

LICENSE:  A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

NOTE:

  • For some positions, a valid California Class A or B Driver License, with Hazardous Materials and Tank Endorsements AND a valid Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) medical certificate dated within the last two years may be required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certificate issued from the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission.

  • California Fire Mechanics Academy Mechanic III/Master Mechanic Certificate issued from the California Fire Mechanics Academy.

  • Class "A" Lamp Adjuster License issued from the State of California, Bureau of Automotive Repair.

  • Class "A" Brake Adjuster License issued from the State of California, Bureau of Automotive Repair.

  • Experience in inspection, troubleshooting and repair of heavy line work on automotive, light/heavy trucks, fire apparatus and safety vehicles.

  • Experience maintaining, diagnosing, repairing or overhauling motorcycles, automotive, light/heavy trucks, fire apparatus, safety vehicles and construction/industrial equipment.
