Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the assistant deputy director for OCEO, the marketing specialist conducts marketing efforts aimed at increasing participation in hunting, fishing, and the shooting sports, serves as the coordinator for the California scholastic archery program, and coordinates statewide outreach and marketing campaigns and events.

Working Conditions

Work with staff statewide to complete work assignments.

Occasional travel required (may include driving a state vehicle or personal vehicle). Occasional weekend or overtime work may be required.

Knowledge of: Principles of product marketing, merchandising, sales, and project management techniques; principles and practices of business administration and management; budgeting techniques and tracking methods; and analytical methods and techniques used for problem identification, data gathering, data analysis, and decision making. Principles, practices, and trends of product development or management and retail marketing; alternative approaches to successful product marketing and merchandising; principles and practices of leadership; advertising program management; principles and practices of market research and analysis; dynamics of a variety of retail environments.

Skill to: Present messaging at the appropriate level of complexity given the intended audience; evaluate program effectiveness and identify areas for potential improvement; coordinate and facilitate internal meetings and teleconferences; remain organized and self-motivated while working on multiple projects and/or assignments to ensure completion within established timeframes; independently review and edit written materials to ensure accuracy and appropriate messaging; work independently under deadline with minimal supervision; conduct and facilitate department participation at various community events; ability to use various platforms to communicate to the public, including emerging social media.

Ability to: Establish and maintain constructive relationships with external contractors and internal support staff; develop and maintain effective sales and expenditure tracking reports; reason logically and creatively, utilizing a variety of analytical techniques to develop and evaluate alternatives; effectively contribute to new business-building opportunities based on product's objectives and strategies; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and a high degree of tact.
