George A Katz Fellowship For Recent NYU School Of Law Graduates

Brennan Center For Justice

Posted 7 days ago

VIEW JOBS 3/15/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-06-13T00:00 The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan public policy and law institute that focuses on improving the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. Among our core priorities, we fight to protect voting rights, to address the challenge of special interest money in our politics, to end mass incarceration, and to advance Constitutional protections in the fight against terrorism. A singular institution – part think tank, part public interest law firm, part advocacy group – the Brennan Center combines scholarship, legislative and legal advocacy, and communications to win meaningful, measurable change in the public sector. For more information about the Center, visit our website: Position: The George A. Katz Fellowship provides a recent graduate of New York University School of Law the opportunity to spend two years as a staff attorney at the Brennan Center for Justice. The Fellowship is generously funded by the law firm of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in honor of George A. Katz, an alumnus of NYU School of Law and a founding partner of the firm. In the fall of 2018, the Brennan Center will select a Katz Fellow for the next fellowship period, fall 2019 - fall 2021. Responsibilities: The Katz Fellow will work alongside other staff on the Brennan Center's public advocacy, research, and litigation initiatives. For the 2019-2021 cycle, the Katz Fellow will work in the Brennan Center's Liberty and National Security (LNS) Program. The Liberty and National Security program works to advance effective national security laws and policies that respect constitutional values, individual rights, and the rule of law. We work to end or reform policies at the intersection of national security, immigration, and law enforcement, including those relating to high-tech surveillance, that intrude on privacy and First Amendment rights – particularly those of Muslim Americans and communities of color. Our work reflects a strong focus on ensuring democratic accountability, including through pushing back on excessive secrecy and expansive assertions of executive power. Activities may include legal and policy analysis; state and federal legislative advocacy; public education and scholarship; litigation, including amicus briefs; and drafting reports, memos, op-eds, legislative testimony, and agency comments. Qualifications: The Katz Fellow should have excellent legal research, writing and analytical skills and possess a commitment to work in the public interest. Relevant past experience and a particular interest in one or more of the Center's specific initiatives will also be valued. Students at NYU School of Law graduating in 2019, and recent judicial clerks and other alumni with up to two years' post-graduate work experience, are encouraged to apply. Applications: Applications must be uploaded by February 28, 2019. Please upload, as one document, a cover letter, resume, law school transcript, two writing samples (up to 10 pages each), and contact information for three references at No phone calls please. The Brennan Center for Justice is committed to a workplace based on equal opportunity and a strong belief in the increased effectiveness that comes from a diverse workforce. To this end, Brennan Center * Hires staff that reflects this country's full range of racial, ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic identities;
 * Creates a workplace where true diversity is fostered and different perspectives are valued and freely exchanged;
 * Ensures that all members of the Brennan Center community feel welcome and respected, and have equal opportunities to thrive and advance within the institution; and
 * Is committed to supporting low-income communities and communities of color particularly affected by social inequities. Brennan Center For Justice New York NY
